Red Wings' boozy confession: We jacked up the Stanley Cup.: And no, the dent wasn't "slight."
It seems there's always a "oops, I dropped the Cub and put a crack/dent in it" story. When the 'Canes won the Cup two years ago, Wally (the equipment guy) dropped it and cracked it.

Yea, every year you hear stories about Cup abuse. 1999 when the Stars won the cup it was supposedly thrown off a balconey into a pool, resulting in a dent. A couple of players, and a few of the trainers, frequented my business, and they brought the cup in for a few minutes one day. It looked in good shape at that point. They seemed to think that there were really two cups. One that the players each got to have for a day, and the original that did not travel. I'd have to think that would make sense. (If I could figure out how to attach a photo I'd add the shot of the cup)

They seemed to think that there were really two cups. There are three, actually.

The penguins broke the top off in Mario's pool in 92. I will always love being able to say I drank from it in 91. it was unreal. The greatest trophy in sport. Something seems to happen to it every year. Can't wait to see what the pens do with it next season.

I guess the Pens will just have to watch it go around the ice being held up by the Wing's again. With Babcock coaching, Holland finding quality skaters, and Ilitch's money, I believe the Wings will have the cup for another year.

You guys are both high. The 100 Mile House Snowdrifters will come from nowhere and win it. You just watch.

"It seems there's always a 'oops, I dropped the Cub and put a crack/dent in it' story." I think 1908 was the last time there was a celebration that involved dropping a Cub! ;-)

... slightly breached by Joe Sakic and Ray Bourque when the Colorado Avalanche won the Cup in 2001. Bourque had, until requesting a trade ...only ever played for the Boston Bruins. The seventh game of the 2001 Finals was the last of Bourque's 22-year NHL career, having never been on a Cup-winning team until that time. When Sakic received the trophy, he did not hoist it, but instead immediately handed it to Bourque I have to admit I cried. My favorite is Martin Brodour leaving butter and salt stains in it after eating popcorn from the bowl. I guess those Red Wings do know how to party hardy! Debo, I thought only the hockey players are allowed to drink from the Cup? Am I missing something?

Debo, I thought only the hockey players are allowed to drink from the Cup? Am I missing something? Sorry debo, I had to jump in here, but like steelergirl, I'd like to hear your story. To try and answer your question, sg, the players are each given the cup to do with what they wish. So my guess is that if a player brought the cup to the local dive, and passed it around to every guy/gal in the bar, you'd have the opportunity to drink from the cup. Unfortunately who knows what else gets passed around to every guy/gal in that bar because they all drank from the cup.

I didn't think of that BoKnows. But I know I could handle a cold or flu to say I drank out of the Stanley Cup. Although I would take just a little sip.

When the pens won the cup in 91, they were doing the "everyone gets a day with the cup". Well that also includes training staff. My father was good friends with one of the trainers who lived in Aliquippa Pa. For those not from PA, Aliquippa is not the best part of town. So anyway, we went to a pool party at this trainers house and the cup was there sitting by the pool on a card table. It was awesome. I opened, poured and drank an Iron city out of it. I will never forget that day. and BO, you say that like you wouldnt have had some yourself. Germafobe

I hope so Bo. I will never forget that day. I still have a picture of me drinking out of it on the mirror in my bedroom .
