Football Filter: is a new "online community a la digg that concentrates on quality links on the world of football (soccer)". via Metafilter Projects.

I joined FF when I first saw it on MeFi Projects, and I emailed the creator to let him know about SportsFilter. I have been following Football Filter in RSS for the last few weeks and, honestly, it isn't much different than reading the RSS feeds from the many other footie-related sites I monitor. The site is clunky too. However, it is young, and may get better, but for now I will come here to discuss footie.

I would love that site... But it's yet another bloody DIGG clone. Digg itself is bad enough:( Disappointing.

I went ahead and joined just to get a 2 digit number in case FF explodes like SF has done.

Not a bad idea folkways, although I know nothing about soccer. I must say I'm not a fan of the site's format. Perhaps I'm spoiled, but SpoFi is much easier to read and follow. Much easier than most community blogs I've come across for that matter.

Hi I set up Football Filter just 3 weeks ago. Was happy to see some feedback from people here, so thought i would sign up and say hello. Yeah the site is a digg clone, but personally it seems the best way to share links for football. Drood out of interest how would you do it - you say you would love the site but it's a digg clone? Would be interested to hear how you would change it to suit your tastes. And Folkways - i was wondering what you mean by getting a 2 digit number? Don't really understand the thinking behind that is. I totally agree that sports filter is better to use - i hope to improve the site one day, problem is i am pretty useless when it comes to the techy stuff. The one thing about my site is that i dont want to focus on just blogs, or just articles, I want to focus on anything football related that is entertaining while hopefully influencing people to look past just their favoured league and follow football in various international countries. I have always been interested in the Bundesliga, the Argentinian league and obviously la liga and Serie A, but struggle to find time to keep up to date with them. I hope that other people feel the same and find the site useful in opening them up to football across the globe. Any more feedback or suggestions you would be much appreciated, the only way I can develop it is to hear how other people slate it! I am biased so my opinion of it can only go so far, ha.!

you say you would love the site but it's a digg clone It looks exactly like digg. That's not great to begin with as it limits a sense of community. I come to Sportsfilter and I feel like I'm at Sportsfilter: there are people here I know, it looks different from everywhere else on the 'net, etc. A pure digg clone is just a link aggregator, which is bad enough, but to have it look just like digg makes it feel like a link farm you got dumped on by a bad Google search result. I think it will be hard to develop a sense of community if you don't brand the site so it looks like a destination instead of a shortcut to somewhere else. Take my words with a grain of salt: I hate digg and the idea of pure link aggregators. Finding links of any quality becomes more important than filtering wheat and chaff and the sites tend to devolve into gamesmanship and inter-site squabbling.

Folkways, great idea! And I know next to nothing about soccer. I used to go to games at my college and the only cheer I knew to yell was "Kick it that way!" I hope to learn more from football filter. Ben, we occasionally have braggingg sessions on SpoFi in which the lower user numbers make fun of the higher user numbers. Search the locker room for Crafty Sousepaw's (He might have been Bullpen Pro at the time) tirade. It was classic. My favorite SpoFi post of all time.

I visited and joined as well. I also don't know much about football, but hope to learn. I'm also staying optomistic about MLS expansion to St. Louis. By the way, the site seemed hard to navigate. I mean, I got myself around to articles and to the comments, it just wasn't as nicely laid out, like it is here. Folkways and hawkguy - I'm hoping I can take my SF # and my FF # and just average it out. But I didn't see any indication on the profile pages of a member #, just a "joined on" date. Kinda like a beer bottle. The evil plan is not panning out.

Folkways - i was wondering what you mean by getting a 2 digit number? Ben, The whole number thing comes from having a jersey with your member number on the back in your profile. Hawk pretty much nailed it, kind of a SportsFilter inside joke and seeing as I am a 4 digit member here I have to endure the "you kids have no idea how it used to be back in the day" speaches from the 'ol farts 'round these parts. Having never been to digg or any of its clones FF is new to me. I have not had much time to spend there as of yet but being a huge footie fan I hope to get over there soon just to check it out.

Although I distinctly remember being named president of the three-thousands. Perhaps that was just a figment of my imagination though.

Hi thanks for the comments again- I can appreciate what you are saying about the site, it does look rather horrible but I had to start somewhere, so I used pligg and I am hoping someday soon i will try and make it my own, got a few friends who are going to help me who have tech skills - i have none, so its an uphill struggle. As for it being an aggregator, it really isnt in a way. I still submit 90% of links and usually do about 2-3 hours a day mooching around looking for things worthwhile. the whole link farm thing is true tho - i intend to add more features but ability wise i am fucked, i have no clue how to hack it and make it my own or even make it look like its own site.....i jumped in at the deep end in the hope that i would eventually figure it out. however you are right, your hatred of digg has no bounds!what happened? we will see eh. as for people joining, thanks, i really appreciate it. If you are coming with little or no knowledge of football then I hope it persuades you to drop the American sports and embrace Football on a full time basis!ha.

Gotta love the shot of beanpole Peter Crouch and his gal in Paris, http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/clancyparis.jpg, he's so tall he makes her look short despiter her being about as tall as me. Doesn't make her any less hot though.

It bugs the hell out of me every time I see her as we share a last name. I don't know how to feel about that.
