Interesting interview and profile with Serena Williams.: From the excellent Observer Sports Monthly. Part two. Serena addresses race, religion, Venus, and Chris Evert. And fashion, of course.
rumple, thanks for posting this. What a deep, interesting look at what comes across as a very complex human being. She appears at once as slightly arrogant, but not unpleasant; very down to earth, but not willing to hide the trappings of her life style; very serious, but with a well-developed sense of humor; and above all as a well-adjusted young lady. Her maturity shows when she talks about re-establishing and refining her game. She appears to have done the same thing that a number of athletes in different sports have done. Josh Beckett, in baseball, is the example that immediately comes to mind. That is, she understood just how far she could go with her "old" game, and realized that it might not be far enough. Too many athletes refuse to make the adjustment, but Serena seems to have done it well. I watched the TV broadcast of the Australian Open, and I saw Serena as a ruthless assassin. This interview really changes the way I perceive her now.

Great article. I too preferred Venus, but I'm guessing that is just cause she was first :) Both are fantastic tennis players.

Only problem with this article was it wasn't long enough. Thanks for the link rumple.

The re-invention of Serena is going to make for some great tennis, and probably a happy life after tennis, I'd say. She's found her way through some significant adversity, and she's done some reflecting on the scary subject of when to call it quits. I'm thinking she'll have some years of top-level tennis and then move on to the next thing when it's time to do so. More power to her!

That's a pretty good interview. I always preferred Venus to Serena, but that's really just arbitrary. They both seem really cool and (all things considered) rather well-adjusted. I wonder why she decided to grant the Guardian an interview after being so closely guarded in her life up to now.
