Insert tight end joke here: New York Giants rookie phenom Jeremy Shockey is catching some grief for comments he made on the Howard Stern show about gay football players: "if I knew there was a gay guy on my college football team, I probably wouldn't, you know, stand for it."
You know... I really don't like anything Shockey said, and think the comments were stupid and homophobic.. BUT he's a young rookie on the Howard Stern show. Howard Stern isn't exactly Connie Chung, he steers conversations in certain directions. This, in my opinion, is just a young guy making a lot of dumb comments that we all hear a lot of ignorant people say. He's still no Randy Moss! :)

I agree with what elsoltano says, however it is also my opinion that most professional athletes would agree with Shockey's remarks. Although my personal experience with pro athletes is somewhat limited, the most athletically gifted people I knew through high school and college all seemed to be macho and overly homophobic. Do team sports seem to breed this stereotype?

the most athletically gifted people I knew through high school and college all seemed to be macho and overly homophobic. Those were probably the gay players on the team. Seriously.

Those were probably the gay players on the team. Right. Because gross generalizations will solve the problem of gross generalizations.

I wouldn't stand for it, surely he was just trying to be funny and when the other guy pursued it he found himself out of his depth.

Maybe he better rethink the Steve Madden shoe contract lest he send the wrong signals.
