Terms of Gates' new deal not disclosed: It seems to me they could have done the deal before they MADE him sign a $380,000 contract. Is San Diego that messed up or are they trying to fix the problem they created?
How is San Diego messed up?. Gates was the one holding out!

"I will say that he was comfortable with where we were. He didn't want to, I guess, go the road to go where we were really trying to go," Colona said. Sounds to me like his agent was the only one who really wanted "to go" there. I am glad that Gates stepped up and signed a contract so he can play, even if it is not the contract money his agent was thinking.

The Chargers' Pro Bowl tight end signed a six-year contract yesterday that rewards him as being among the four best-compensated tight ends in the NFL in terms of virtually guaranteed money. Doesn't sound like he'll be hurting much either

How is San Diego messed up?. Gates was the one holding out! Gates broke the single season TD record for TEs and he didn't want to get paid the league minimum. He wasn't under contract with SD, but was an exclusive rights free agent. So, unable to get a deal done, San Diego puts him on the Roster Exempt List. Gates comes into camp the next day and a contract extension deal is done within a week. But Gates is suspended for three games. That is how San Diego is messed up.

San Diego may be messed up according to you, but I think they have a great team heading into the season especially at line backer. Just need a good kicker.

His sitting out the home opener is nobody's fault but his! Gates knew what would happen if he missed the reporting deadline.

Gates knew what would happen if he missed the reporting deadline. There is no procedure that made this step necessary. The fact that it is an option for clubs to use does not mean that the Chargers had to use it. The Packers were in a similar situation, yet they didn't take this drastic measure. And, you make it sound like it is a punishment for Gates, but it really punishes all of the Chargers and their fans.

Based on this article, it looks like Gates caved. I predict he will be complaining about this deal in three years.
