Apparently, there is crying in baseball: Chronic bat flipper Bret Boone lets the waterworks flow while talking about being designated for assignment by the Mariners, effectively ending his career in Seattle.

Not sure which way you meant that, tommysands- he's put up some good seasons- some great seasons, such as 2001- but overall has not been the 2nd basemen he sometimes showed the promise of being. I appreciate that he cried- it's nice to see a player be sad at the prospect of leaving a team, which suggests he really enjoyed his time with the Mariners. Compared to the "I gotta feed my family!" nonsense and cold-hearted business rationales, a little emotion never hurt. Or I guess it's possible he's just sad his career is coming to an end...

It's too bad, but he's got minor league numbers for sure and isn't doing the Mariners any favours by being a hole in the lineup. That said, couldn't the Mariners have maybe saved him a little face here? A trade or a release (though the designation amounts to same thing)? He was an important part of their franchise for so long...

A trade or a release (though the designation amounts to same thing)? He was an important part of their franchise for so long... Sadly, that is the only way they could release him (designation for assignment). They could have worked out a trade without this embarrassment, but I have a feeling that no one wanted to take his contract at his current skill level. He could still get traded in the next 10 days.

i thought it was good to see a player with some devotion towards his team in a time when money matters most

Considering the numbers he's put up over the years, he has a right to shed a few tears.
