Construction worker to play in Super Bowl.: Jeff Thomason, 35, assistant project manager in construction, retired from the NFL two years ago and ... will don a Philadelphia Eagles helmet one more time. ... Thomason was plucked from obscurity by the Eagles after starting tight end Chad Lewis sustained a serious foot injury. I remember a post about some college kid who got a callup to be a NHL goalie because he was fourth choice and the others were injured or indisposed. But this has got to take the cake. Wow, has this happened in any major pro championship final?

I didn't add, of course, that Thomason has been to two Super Bowls with the Packers, won once, and played 10 yrs in the NFL, and keeps his 6' 10" 255 lb body in shape by doing martial arts. And that Lewis, the guy he's replacing, personally lobbied for Thomason to take his spot. Heh.

And I'm sure someone won't add that we've got a decent discussion about this here. It happens to the best of them, wc2k2. :) Wow, has this happened in any major pro championship final? Lester Patrick (coach of the New York Rangers) stepped in to play goalie for the team during the Stanley Cup finals in 1928.

Foisted on my own petard? I meant "hoisted on my own petard". Can someone hurry up and delete this post and the comments before I make a bigger ass of myself? Please?

grum, if it makes you feel any better, I once used "foist on his own petard" in a paper for high school because I misheard the usage in an episode of Rocky & Bullwinkle.
