Cocktease: Steve Spurrier has agreed to coach South Carolina, but might not get the job -- Lou Holtz won't say whether he's leaving at the end of this season.

I say-I will believe it when I see it. Sounds like it is in Holtz hands-whether or not he retires.....Holtz has been looking and sounding tired this year. His wife has had some health problems. Spurrier wills be a good fit I feel!

Much as I loved Lou at Notre Dame, he's the living emodiment of Dana Carvey's Grumpy Old Man and his open nepotism policy blows.

Lou Holtz vs. Joe Paterno in a cage match for the grumpy old man title... (the recently grumpy Paterno anyway...)

Can Joepa even see any more? He's basically The Moleman from Fantastic Four, so I guess the question is whether he gets to bring his underlings and if the fight is above ground or not.

That's an easy one to handicap. No one would land a punch until Joe Pa tripped accidentally in about the third round and fall against Lou Ho, who would immediately crumble to dust.

Also, rcade: Nice title.

My question is why does Spurrier want the South Carolina job? Isn't it a big step down in class? Although maybe he's just tired of the high pressure situations and wants to go back to something like he had in the Duke days.

Best. Title. Evar. I think Spurrier would be a good fit here. Lou has brought the Gamecocks to that sort of "standing at the dance, but not getting the pretty girls" level of NCAA football. With Steve at the helm, they'll attract speedburners and rocketarms to play in his offense, and he'll be a hero again.

My question is why does Spurrier want the South Carolina job? Um, my guess is that alumnus, and former Cocks tailback, Hootie Johnson offering the golf-nut Spurrier a membership at Augusta had something to do with it. My in-laws have Gamecocks season tickets, and while they don't like the idea of a former gator coaching their beloved team, they like the idea of possibly beating all the rivals they are used to losing to. 0-14 against Florida in past makes supporters more likely to want to embrace their former enemy, I guess ;)

I can understand why SC wants Spurrier, terrapin, that's easy but hey, what golfer wouldn't give a nut for an Augusta membership. Although Good Ol' Hootie might says that's reason to lose said membership too.

Spurrier is pissed at Florida for asking him to go through an interview process to get his old job back. I think he's hoping to turn South Carolina into an SEC juggernaut and rub Florida's face in it.

I have heard the Spurrier has denied he was getting a memership to Augusta!

Well, I think I can guarantee that Steve's move had nothing to do with Hootie offering Jerri Spurrier a membership ;)

Well, it's official -- Lou has decided to hang up the whistle. Is Steve standing in the wings?
