David Beckham: started Saturday's World Cup Qualifier against Wales on a yellow card, knowing that getting another one would get him banned for the next game (away to Azerbijan on Wednesday). Towards the end of the match he put in two ridiculous tackles and got booked, and thus misses the next game. In the Daily Telegraph today he says he broke some ribs in the first tackle so he decided to get booked so he could serve out his suspension whilst injured. "I'm sure some people think that I have not got the brains to be that clever. But I do have the brains. I could feel the injury. So I fouled (Ben) Thatcher." Shame on those of us who asumed that a man who would say such a thing to a national newspaper has no brains.
I thought that was exactly what he was doing. If I was in his situation and knew I wouldn't play the next game because of injury, then why not get another yellow and likely dodge future suspensions? It's better for England that way.

That's fine. But to openly admit that's exactly what you're doing is a little... unsubtle. Just checking - there's no way they could move the suspension, in light of this admission, up to the next game, could they?

Oh that would be great!

Kind of bad form. Couldn't he have not done this and just not played because of injury? Surely Real doesn't need him for this particular match. However, I am sure he's not the first to use the carding system to get a day off.

The bloke's a fecking eejit. Yes, get yourself deliberately booked, but then STFU about it. I hope they extend the ban, maybe that would teach him to keep his bleeding gob shut.

is there anything wrong with deliberately drawing a yellow? apart from the actual infraction? sure mouthing off about it isn't the most brilliant of choices, but it doesn't deserve further punishment. If it was a red card involving injury to another player, then fine, give him double suspension, or prosecute. but getting a second yellow while knowing you're already not gonna play the next game frees you up from not having to worry about the single booking later in the proceedings.

I'm with the Fooker, chico and squealy. You made the system work for you, Becks. Now, shut up about it, you idjit! UEFA could review the match, and then issue him a longer ban. The England FA did that with Darren Purse at WBA. Wonder if UEFA rules allow that.

so, what's the formation against Azerbajagdslknasl;gj.? Robinson Cole-Terry-Ferdinand-Campbell Butt-Hargreaves-Lampard-SWP Smith-Owen or Robinson Cole-Ferdinand-Campbell Butt-Hargreaves-Lampard-SWP Rooney Smith-Owen Huh? Huh?

My guess would be Robinson G. Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole Butt, Lampard, SWP Rooney Owen, Smith/Defoe
posted by squealy at 12:54 PM on October 12, 2004
Why would either of you select Smith over Defoe? I'm waiting to see Saturday's match, it's on FSW tonight or tomorrow, but what I read says that Defoe was very good in the first outing with this formation. I'm pretty much with Squealy on the lineup otherwise except I wouldn't mind seeing Hargreaves getting a run out in place of Mr. Behind.

Oh, and Becks is a dork. But a very rich dork with a hot wife.

Dunno what you've been reading bill but Defoe wasn't up to much. Smith came on and looked lively.

garfield (and perhaps others)- it's not how you wrote it. he didn't get a second yellow in the game. over the course of a number of international games, once you reach something like 3 yellows, you are automatically suspended for a game. this has nothing to do with red cards. he had two previous yellows from previous games hanging over his head, so by getting this third, he's suspended from the azerbaijan match but then his yellow card count is reset. so now he'll need three more yellows over the course of future games to have another suspension, whereas if he didn't do this, he'd only need one more card to get suspended. (i could be wrong with 3. whatever the number is, it's the same story.) furthermore, this has nothing to do with playing for real madrid. (card-wise)

Its 2=suspension... Watching the game right now, why are they booing Bellamy?

Because they hate his flowing blonde locks?

Watching the game right now, why are they booing Bellamy? Because he's a whiney chode? And I *like* the 'pies.

Why are they booing Bellamy? He's Welsh! And he looks like he could eat an apple through a tennis racket. There was a poll on the BBC story about Beckham's antics asking what he'd done wrong: 1) Committed a deliberate foul 2) Told the world he'd done it 3) Nothing Number 2 was winning with about 75% of the vote when I looked. I for one hope they slap an extra match ban on him for bringing the game into disrepute - and not just because I'm from Northern Ireland (and that would rule him out for England's game against us). And another thing! If you're going to get yourself deliberately booked, why not do something that doesn't risk injuring another player (or yourself further) - it's not like there's any shortage of stupid bookable infractions these days - he could have just taken his shirt off! That way he would have gotten himself booked and been able to show off his latest tattoo.

now that sounds like a relatively bright thing to do. I don't recall Beckham ever being accused to being relatively bright though.

That way he would have gotten himself booked and been able to show off his latest tattoo. I completely agree. I think it would've been pretty funny if he threw the ball into the stands or something.. I guess he was pissed at Thatcher for coming in hard and cracking his ribs so that was the only thing on his mind..

That is just too funny though... He brags about having brains, only to fuck himself over with those brains! What a clown. You know, i don't really hate Beckham as a person or a player...i mean, i don't think he deserves to be rated as such a great player. And all the media hype about him being a great player is what angers me when i talk about him. If the English media would just admit that he is not the skillful player they push down our throats everyday and just say that he is fun to write about and we are seriously only interested in his goings on outside of football, he would be a lot more tolerable.

You know, looking at the replay again...i don't blame Beckham for running into Thatcher. He was pissed off. Thatcher had his elbow up into Beckham on the previous play which caused Beckham to get his ribs bruised. After all this, i think Beckham is getting picked on really...
posted by StarFucker at 12:09 AM on October 14, 2004
Thatcher had his elbow up because Beckham came at him like a train with no intention of getting the ball. Not that I'm defending the actions of a Welshman. Ever.
posted by JJ at 03:26 AM on October 14, 2004
I mean in the original foul... The one where Beckham hurt his ribs. I thought that Beckham DID come in hard, but the ball was still 50/50 i thought. Anyway, Thatcher shouldn't have had his elbow up that high and i don't understand why there isn't a FA investigation into that...
posted by StarFucker at 08:47 AM on October 14, 2004
Probably because Thatcher didn't go to the Daily Telegraph the next day and say "I put my elbow up on purpose because I'm really clever." My observation that Beckham came at him like a train holds true for both tackles. Sometimes he turns into spoilt-playground-kid on a mission to get the ball or wreck you, for no apparent reason. (I'd like to see an action area chart of the pitch showing the various places that Becks has picked up bookings - he only ever seems to do it when there is absolutely no need to)

HA! What a dick... He most likely is covering up the fact that he doesn't want to GO to Azerjabjajdoaindszz....unfortunately for him, he doesn't have the brains to come up with either a better lie or just shutting up about it.
