Self-scoring...: is golf the only game in the world where you can win and, everyone can see you win, and then you lose because you didn't get it quite right when you tried to write it down?
I've always thought it interesting that players calculate their own scores, but then again, I'm a notorious cheater. Will the scorers responsible for scoring now also be responsible for noticing and assessing penalties for infractions?

If the players don't, then the viewers certainly will. This is what happened as CBS signed off from covering last week's MCI Classic in Hilton Head, SC. The television coverage ended as controversy swirled regarding a possible Rules infraction by Cink. For the next half hour, PGA Tour officials received numerous phone calls from television viewers who were stunned when Cink brushed aside lose pebbles behind his ball. Because the hazard was a waste area and not a sand bunker, Cink was allowed to move lose impediments. However, some thought he had improved his lie. Tour official Slugger White disagreed. After reviewing the videotape, White ruled that it wasn't a penalty, thus giving Cink the championship title after an anxious 30-minute wait.

Forget that -- let's save a few bucks and make all athletes keep their own statistics. Nothing is more thrilling than watching the world's best hockey players calculate their own plus/minus ratio.

How would other sports pan out if the players had to fill in post match reports and suffer such dire consequences if they got them wrong? "Umm, David, it says here that you scored three goals, when actually you only scored one - I'm afriad that means the other team wins. Should have paid more attention in school, shouldn't you?" *grunt* "Oh never mind. Go back to sleep."
