There's always hope.: Local paper sees light at the end of a loooong tunnel for Northern Ireland (1,242 scoreless minutes and counting).

Aastonscullion: Despite the possibility for confusion, the protocol here is to use the "soccer" topic for the beautiful game.

Oops.. terribly sorry. Strange - as an Irishman, I would usually say soccer anyway..

Only 30 minuntes away from the all time world record.

Yes, nearly 14 games without a goal has got to be disheartening.

I read that article and after seeing the names of the strikers came to realize that this is simply an effort by the local paper to give some hope to its readers as there's almost no chance at all this set of non-top level forwards will go net against Norway.

I imagine that 1,242 min is an understatement if I am correct in my assumption that the injury time added on at the ends of halves is not officially counted in this total. say 14 games x 5 min of injury time per game = another 70 min. Not to rub their noses in it.

Despite the possibility for confusion, the protocol here is to use the "soccer" topic for the beautiful game. And yet, strangely enough, despite the possibility for confusion, TPTB persist in using "football" for American football. /snark.

The 1982 and 1986 world cups seem a long long time ago, now don't they? Seriously, when you consider the quality of the players available to Sanchez, it looks like the IFA (or is it the FAI??) ought to be scheduling a match with Andorra if they want a win. I'm surprised no Americans have challenged the author's view that Maik Taylor has been better than Timmy in the Premiership this year. Personally I couldn't say. I try not to watch either Birmingham City or Manchester United.

I guess it's not happening today. 3-0 and it's only the first half.

They finally got one. Too late to prevent the world record though...

Well, at least they scored. And got the world record. ;-)

OTOH, they scored one more goal today thann the Americans did in their match. I cannot believe our boys didn't play better, especially after the embarrasment in Mexico last week. Of course, my fecking cable box played tricks on me today and I didn't get to tape this either.
