Freddie Gets Paid: Is MLS really doing the right thing by paying a 14 year old who's yet to appear on the field the biggest $$$? According to this report, Adu will get $500k plus performance bonuses followed by Josh Wolff, Landon Donovan and Eddie Pope.

On marketing alone, Adu's $500,000 is probably cheap for the MLS, but I can't imagine that the league's star players will accept being paid less than a 14-year-old prospect.

Um, they haven't even said who Adu is going to play for have they? And what will this $500,000 get them during the 2004 season? Can he legally play full-time? Will he?

Um, they haven't even said who Adu is going to play for have they? Yes, they have. At the very least, that money is going to get people into the stadiums, so it might be a nice ROI for the MLS.

Adu is going to be on the pitch every possible minute for DC United, who could use a boost after the last couple of seasons. Michael Owen, OTOH, is now rumored to be more likely to ditch his agent than the Reds.

Smart move or the first sign of the salary structure slipping out of control?
