I was at the FSU game Saturday at Doak Campbell where 79,000 people saw their National Championship dream die when Jordan Travis got tackled and didn't get back up. Because of a disagreement over seats on my row, I didn't see the play or the replay (if one was shown), but the way players on both teams gathered around I knew it wasn't good.

I'd never been to a game there before my son enrolled at FSU this fall. It is the biggest atmosphere for a college football game I've been around. I kept hoping ESPN College GameDay would pick Tallahassee as it made an undefeated run so I could go to Collegetown for that pregame madness.

What Mike Norvell has done here is fantastic. The Noles probably weren't going to win it all even with Travis, but it's one of the best teams the school has ever fielded.

Glad you've got the FSU thing happening in the family. And that they finally made the right hire and Norvell has succeeded amid the tales of other rising "coaching whizzes" who struggled in bigger jobs, like Justin Fuente, Scott Frost, Billy Napier, Mario Cristobal, Skip Holtz, Al Golden, Bryan Harsin, et al.

And most of the guys that Tennessee hired after Fulmer and before Heupel.

But late at night, the ride between Jax and Tallahassee on I-10 can be unsettling. Strange energy.
