After leading the San Antonio Spurs to the 2002-03 NBA championship, Tim Duncan and David Robinson are named SI's Sportsmen of the Year.
A good choice? Who would you have voted, all things considered?

If the US had done better in the Gold Cup, Landon Donovan.

I'd give to Mario Lemieux, for sucking $5mill in normal payroll out of Pittsburgh, having not even played a quarter of the season, and for so graciously not accepting the $5mill pay raise he hasn't earned....and for ending his career in the most time-honored way: breaking.

Ned Yost - manager, Milwaukee Brewers. Why? For keeping a positive, can-do attitude in the midst of all this shit. So maybe he's not a player, but he's definitely a sport. And a class act.

Lance won last year, vito. I can see him winning again when he finally retires, assuming the streak is still going, but two years in a row is probably a bit extreme. It's a nice nod to the Admiral for his career, but I don't think his play this year was all that exceptional. I'm kind of against using the title "Sportsman of the Year" as a career goal, like the hall of fame of magazine covers. Then again, I can't really think of many standout athletes this year.

Hmm, Ufez, I can't think of any reason to not give it to him again. Every year the route changes, and winning one year is no guarantee of future success. Still have to go out and log all those miles in the offseason to gear up. I just can't really think of anybody else as deserving, because I agree that it shouldn't be a lifetime achievement award. Sportsman of 2003, in my humble opinion (hah!) has got to be the Texan.

Lance. Bode Miller. Diana Taurasi. Good god, there are so many more deserving athletes it's not funny.

Now now. Duncan earned it. As for Robinson, he was Tattoo to Duncan's Ricardo Montelban. And now they've traded (well, not literally, but still...) Robinson for Horry. Did anyone else laugh when Horry punched Robinson in the balls during that series? My dad thought it was hysterical...

I will probably give it to Lance as long as he owns the Tour de France.
