Sad to see him go, but Bruins were going to use him primarily as a 7th defenseman. They were not going to shell out any heavy money for that. Bruins are in a tight salary cap situation, so there's that. I wonder what Caps offered him.

Under 1 Meg is cheap. I guess it all came down to "where is the team going, and how do you plan to use me?". Chara's absence leaves a hole on the left side of the D, so GM Don Sweeney best pray that some of the defenseman now in development can show much improvement.

I don't see Chara's departure as problematic from an on-ice standpoint. Sure, he still brings leadership and toughness to any blue line, but his days as a #1 D man are well behind him. I'm sure the B's would rather he retire than go to an Eastern Conference rival, but that is mostly for the sake of legacy. Today's smaller, quicker skaters have been torching Z on the open ice for several years now. In front of the net, well, that's a different story...
