Committed athlete or athlete that should be committed?: Colin McRae, World Rally Championship driver for Ford, isn't letting a badly damaged finger get in the way of winning.
According to the team, McRae has told them that if the finger becomes a problem and takes away from his chances to win a championship – he would consider having the finger amputated.
Never mind Ronnie Lott: if McRae needs his finger chopped off, Irving Fryar's wife is the person to see.

Reminds me of the story of Larry Alford II , a nationally-ranked junior golfer who lost his arm in an automobile accident. This only proved to be a minor setback as he has continued to strive toward competing professionally on tour.

Ronnie Lott has the tip of his injured finger amputated because it hindered his ability to handle the football. As well, I think there were a couple of other players mentioned in this thread on our sister site.
