Vinny goes down...again.: Testaverde will undoubtedly become backup to Pennington this Sunday. Vinny served the Jets well the past few years. What the hell happened to him? He looks terrified out on the field.

I'm sure you've all noticed it. Vinny is tentative. He isn't following through on his release. He isn't hanging in the pocket. He's all but dropped to his knees after the snap on every offensive series. Should he have gotten out early?

The stuff about Testaverde going down previously was all rumor and innuendo. I believe it though.

Here's my question: Is Vinny a Hall-of-Famer? His passing stats are getting up there, but I wonder if he's not a case of a player attaining statistical heights more through longevity than anything else.

He looks terrified out on the field. You'd be terrified, too, nemo, if you were old enough to be Namath's backup playing against today's hopped-up-on-THG defensive manimals.

Hall of Famer? Huh? What? Vinny makes the Hall of Fame only if the committee is made up of the people who forget that he is actually a lousy quarterback. Look, he has some raw talent and he's developed some veteran savvy, but a Hall of Fame quarterback he is not. He's had exactly one good year, by my count. He's always played on lousy teams. He's thrown as many interceptions as TDs. He cost Miami a national championship, not that that counts for much, but he did. And of course, he is not anywhere close to being in the top tier of quarterbacks for his generation (my ultimate measure for the HOF).

While I agree that he's never been a "winner", I think he might end up getting some consideration anyway at least from people who put emphasis on statistics. Going into this season, Vinny was in the Top 10, All-time, in attempts, completions, and yards, and tied for twelfth in touchdowns; and in each category, he outranks a number of Hall-of-Famers who did play for good teams. (Lists here.) With numbers like that, I would not be surprised to see his name come up when he's eligible. Not that he'll get in, but I don't think it's quite the slam-dunk case that you do, simply because I suspect he'll get some sympathy precisely because he played on so many bad teams.
