RIP Mel Stottlemyre, a stalwart, upstanding sporting anchor of my youth. I wasn't a Yankees fan, but still followed his box scores closely and admired him.

I can only echo beaverboard's post. As a Red Sox fan I never liked to see him on the mound. He was not physically imposing, did not have a blazing fastball, but all he did was win. His obituary is another that makes me feel very old. RIP.
