A day of reckoning is soon to come to my sleepy burg, for far too long our local National Hockey League franchise has taunted the hurricane gods with an outrageous mockery of a team name: the Hurricanes. A name given in innocent intent to commemorate a past storm that ripped through the town, but the hurricane gods do believe in modern human constructs such as "innocence" and "guilt." We are in a state of guilt for having ridiculed them in such a base comportment. I bid thee farewell, o fellow sports fans of the internet...Farewell. I wish my final words to be remembered thus: Fuck the Bears

I often wondered whether that team name was a good idea.

Well, your buddy Bears got shocked, so no need to worry about them for a week. The Packers team doc said Rodgers couldn't make his situation any worse if he went back out there. No comment from the doc as to whether Aaron could make things worse for Chicago.

Unfortunately, I think you should have gotten away from the internet and TV about 14 hours ago, so you wouldn't have had to watch the Jets put a big hurt on your Lions.

I dated a girl named Florence once. She had a bad temper, blew her top, and knocked over a large vase of flowers, spilling water everywhere. I think you are about to meet her daughter. Keep your head up, NoMich, get to somewhere safe, remember to pack your life vests in the car when you evacuate, and let us know how you are when it's done. Praying for you.

First and foremost, NoMich: you and your family please be safe.

Second, I don't see how you can blame the hockey team for the impending storm, even if they've had "an outrageous mockery of a team name." I mean, it's not like Arizona has been overrun with rabid coyotes...

...yet.

I don't even want to know about an increased reports of Red Wings in the Detroit area. You just keep that info to yourself, Meaty.

Thanks for the thoughts, fellow internet sports fans. Hopefully going five hours west will allow us to avoid the worst of the storm. The models are right now predicting 10 - 15 inches of rain to fall in the Raleigh area and only an inch or two in Cherokee.

Thankfully our house is half way up a hill, so I'm not too worried about flooding at the house. I *am* worried about all of the old growth trees in my yard. The pines should be OK as they bend and never break, but the hardwoods are a different story. Who knows what we'll coming home to later on in the weekend.

I noticed that the NOAA storm track prediction has been altered, and now Florence appears to be heading straight to Pedro's South of the Border once it makes landfall.

Maybe it will knock down the Sombrero Tower and the entrance sign. And a few billboards. If the hurricane levels the whole place and they apply for Federal disaster relief funding, would they be forced to include a replica border wall as part of the rebuild loan agreement?

The nice thing about Portland having the Timbers and Trailblazers is we already have the trees and trails....
