To be fair, he didn't do anything really exciting, and that's pretty much how he won the tournament. No bogeys in the final two rounds, and 16 holes at par in the final round is simple, boring, and effective play.
I don't blame the media for getting excited early on, as there were a lot of potential story lines to play up:
"Tiger roars back!"
"Spieth goes back-to-back!"
"Rory returns!"
"England's Rose in bloom!"
"Steady Eddie sets the standard!"

I wasn't able to watch the final round of the British Open yesterday, so I checked for live posts from journalists during the morning.
As the hottest names kept doing notable things to jam the top of the leaderboard, the hyperventilating became palpable.
Then Molinari won, and the coverage quickly tanked into radio silence. By mid afternoon, there was no mention at all of the tournament on the front pages of the NYT, Wash. Post, and several other online news publications. I guess the poor guy ruined everyone's Sunday.
