MLB TV reaches settlement on fan lawsuit, will allow purchase of single team packages. MLB lawyers said "they were planning to make the same changes to their television packages as the National Hockey League made when it settled its side of the lawsuit last year. The NHL also agreed to let fans buy single-team packages."

Pete Rose to enter Hall of Fame (for the Reds).

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to purchase your home team's games. I guess the NHL just doesn't want my money.

Well, it's more like they want the local TV money more than your money.
In Canada, Rogers paid $5billion (that's BILLION, not million) for twelve years of TV rights to the NHL, so they definitely don't want people to cut the cord and watch their local games on the NHL site instead. They need the eyeballs/cable-boxes on the big screen to charge the big ad revenue to make it worth it.
Live sports is pretty much the only reason I have a (high-definition) cable package at this point. I still record other shows, but I know I could switch to online/torrent viewing for the scripted stuff. Sports...I gotta watch (somewhat) live.

That's great and all, but I don't have cable/satellite. Oh well. It's not like the Hurricanes is putting forth something worth watching anyway.

Just about the time when I once again begin to hate Montreal Canadiens, they do something like this.
Denna Laing suffered a serious spinal injury while playing in a women's professional hockey game. The Boston Bruins have set up a fund of some $200K to help her with her rehabilitation. Players and Bruins management were donating various items to be raffled off to raise funds. Before the start of tonight's Boston vs Montreal game in Montreal, the Canadiens' organization announced that they too would participate in the fund raiser. All of the players from both teams donated their game-worn jerseys to be auctioned off. How can even the most die hard Bruins fan hate the Canadiens -- except for the 60 minutes or so when they are playing. Say what you might, Montreal runs a class organization.

...which was resolved properly.

Do we blame them for that or the league?

I blame them for being a party to the league's request to subvert the vote. They could have said "No, we don't want him in the trade." and make the NHL do their own dirty work.

I don't get why the NHL felt it necessary to trade and demote him. Why not just have the Coyotes send him to Springfield and use that as the excuse?

That would have been too obvious. I guess they thought that trading him to another team as part of a deal and then having that new team demote him would have been less obvious.
