Tiger Woods to be a Ryder Cup vice captain in 2016: Ian Poulter thinks it's a good idea. Rory McIlroy is "visibly surprised". Two questions arise: what can we infer from his acceptance of the role about the extent of his back injury, and why would Davis Love III want someone in the team room who hasn't played on a winning US team since 1999?
I think the fact that it's a vice captaincy has to be taken into account.

No better man for that role, undoubtedly.

Tiger is 4-1-2 in singles play in the Ryder Cup, and 9-16-1 in a team format. His partners in those team-ups are a combined 22-20-10 in singles play.

Fair enough, but he's hardly the epitome of the spirit of the Ryder Cup, is he?

Is the spirit of the Ryder Cup similar to the [SPOILER ALERT] spirits that come out of the Ark of the Covenant and wreak all kinds of hell on the Nazis at the end of the first Indiana Jones movie?

Holden, that would be an awesome improvement.

Answers probably: nothing and "because he's Tiger Woods".
