Matt Haughey is Stepping Down at MetaFilter: Since so many SportsFilter users came over from MetaFilter, I wanted to share Mathowie's news that he's removing himself from day-to-day operations at the mothership to take a new gig. He announced it today so it's a good time to go there and pay tribute to the Willie Mays of the community weblog.

A slightly edited version of what I posted on another site (not MeTa):
I'm slightly more maudlin about this than I would've figured. I got my first MeFi account in April of 2001, registered from the Econ department of my undergrad university while doing work-study mere weeks before I entered the adult world.
I was such a baby then and MeFi has (for much more better than worse) forever shaped my perception of what the internet is and what its social capabilities are. Hell there are people that I've known for well over a third of my life thanks to MeFi that I would have otherwise never gotten the chance to interact with or meet IRL. And that's pretty fucking awesome. I'm not alone, but I'm awfully indebted to Matt. I wish nothing but the best for him, whatever his next (ad)venture is.
