The Cardinals home opener yesterday drew 47,492, the largest crowd in Busch Stadium's nine years. The stat box says that attendence is "108% full."

I hadn't heard this Reggie Jackson quote before:
Reggie Jackson ... once responded to a question about Nolan Ryan by conceding that he's fond of fastballs in the same way that he enjoys ice cream. "But you don't like it when someone's stuffing it into you by the gallon."

Hank Aaron's record-breaking home run was 40 years ago today. I was six. I think it might be the last major American sports milestone I don't remember being aware of at the time.

I was in a college radio station staff meeting when the game was on. The sports department was all honey-I-shrunk-the-kids geeks. The music people were each in a personal designer cloud of their own. The sports guys made everyone stop the meeting and watch every time Aaron came up to bat. When he hit the big one, everyone knew it was a major moment well worth witnessing and savoring. Thank you geeks. You knew best.

My first thought upon seeing Elvis Andrus last night was, "Must be the one guy that looked at the 9/11 hijackers as fashion icons". Glad to see someone in the administration has called him out for his facial hair.

Which reminds me: ESPN is doing a 30 for 30 soccer series starting with the Hillsborough Disaster a week from tonight.

Call me when he gets to Moeen Ali beard status.

I'm convinced the Andrus beard made him drop the ball on a relay last night. It's off balance.
Adrian Beltre reached first yesterday and pulled Napoli's beard. He got an elbow in response.

Back in the 70's, guys had scraggly beards and there were no Brazilian waxing salons. There was a sense of balance that has shifted dramatically.

Don and Jerry on NESN were talking about Beltre and Koji as two of the most entertaining Sox players of the last 10 years which led to wondering what would happen if Koji high-fived Beltre's head.

Will Leitch thought he needed a 376-word prelude and another 2,495 words to review the videogame RBI Baseball 14.

Champion's Dinner at Augusta tonight, featuring Moreton Bay Bugs with Pavlova for dessert.
(Lobster and meringue pie, for the curious uninitiated like myself).
Rumours that Adam Scott would be serving kanga turned out to be just that.
It could have been worse. A whole lot worse.
In Alice Springs a while back, I was served a dish called "The Coat of Arms". Kangaroo on one side of the plate, Emu on the other.
/Kangaroo is a tasty, lean, gamey meat. Great for barbies but not much else. It also makes up a lot of our pet meat from the licensed shooting operations. Some species are in plague proportions and are culled regularly.

I've actually had kangaroo thanks to our local back-water Gordon Ramsey impresario and have to admit it was quite good. In retrospect I feel a little queasy because they are cute, but I have a rule about trying anything I've never seen on a menu before. Which is why I rarely leave town.

That looks like a good reason to spin the Xbox up, right after blowing into it.
