Today the bowl season kicks off in illustrious style with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. I will always have a curious fondness for this event. Two years ago, I was on travel and happened to have some down time in a hotel room with some liquid refreshments and ended up watching most of the game.

I was captivated by the terra cotta ranges in the background, the overcast weather, the half empty stadium, and like many others, I watched in stunned surprise as Bob Davie, who was calling the game, announced to a breathless nation that he was ending his hiatus from the sidelines and would be coaching the New Mexico football team from that very stadium the following fall.

When a man decides to Lobo up, all one can do is stand by in silent admiration. And pour another.

It's also my favorite kind of bowl (and honestly, college football game in general), featuring two teams that are great on offense and terrible on defense, thus promising tons of points.

"It was a dramatic comeback to open the bowl season and came as both quarterbacks threw for close to 800 years combined."

Also, props to San Diego State's mascot dude, for wearing this rig to their bowl game, being played in lovely Boise.

Sadly everyone else was asleep and I was supposed to be working.
