Washington Fan: I Won't Use That Slur Any More: "I am a third-generation fan of the professional football team in Washington. When my family sat down for pancakes last weekend, with a big game against Washington's archrival, Dallas, looming on the eve of Columbus Day, I had to tell my children why we were not going to use the team's nickname anymore. Question.............Why not just change the name to the Washington NATIVE AMERICANS. I know the "R" name is a brand but, this would at least keep it close to the original brand and I would think, shouldn't offend anyone.

It would still invite ridicule of Native Americans by opposing fans. One of the things that propelled the movement to eliminate these mascots was all the "Scalp the Injuns!" crap at school pep rallies.

When Washington changes its name, it will pick one that has no controversial aspects.
