Blimey. 15 days to go.

She might not win a boxing gold, but India's Mary Kom has an amazing story.

That's a fantastic article owlie, thanks. One of the few articles on the Internet where the comments are enjoyable as well.

Two instances of non-human urine and a mystery bottle falling out of your waistband during a a drug test? Urine trouble, Mr. Williams.

Brian Wilson didn't bring The Machine to the ESPY's, instead choosing a lower profile date.

Justin Verlander is still trying to get into the Perfect Club with Kate Upton.

Brian Wilson tries way to hard.

Bringing a sasquatch to the ESPYs is trying exactly the right amount.

First off, I'd never watch the ESPYs. I hate awards shows to begin with, but those would have to be the worst! I enjoy athletes on the field/court/etc., but off it, I'd rather never have to see them.

Second, Wilson just seems to be pushing the "crazy" thing way too much. Seeing as how his pitching career is in jeopardy, he is probably doing everything in his power to secure his next gig, whether it's in TV, movies, whatever.

Kobe Bryant has a dream.

May have to start watching more MLS. Someone please drug/ shock/ spring test Darren Mattocks.

For the record, Larry Bird agrees with Kobe.

posted by yerfatma at 07:10 PM on July 12, 2012

That's likely the most appropriate response any of the original Dream Team-ers could've offered. Well done, Mr. Bird.

posted by littleLebowski at 07:22 PM on July 12, 2012

Larry Bird's response is funny. I think this team should win the Olympics gold before being compared to the Dream Team. They do have opponents they have to beat, and it is sporting to give them their due.

Nah, he's just been watching some of this.

"Speckies"? Also, is it a good thing or a bad thing the announcers are talking about "indigenous players"?

posted by yerfatma at 09:22 AM on July 13, 2012

"Speculators" - i.e. taking a chance. Been AFL slang for years.

In Australia (at least in recent years), the term "indigenous" is commonly accepted by indigenous and non-indigenous alike, and is less of a mouthful than the more formal "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander". While indigenous people make up less than 2% of Australia's total population, they represent up to 20-25% of professional AFL players, and probably a similar figure In Rugby League.

Kobe Bryant has a dream.

The '92 team was better but could Jordan be any more of a dick about it? Which got me thinking, which team is the biggest bunch of assholes? I think the '92 team wins just on Jordan alone but I mean Kobe's plenty talented in that regard too. I'm sure many would say LeBron could win this for his team but I think he's overrated as an asshole.

posted by tron7 at 10:38 AM on July 13, 2012

I don't think anyone knew the full extent of Jordan's dickishness in '92. I think we need to give this team more time to develop their own dickish tendencies before we do a fair comparison.

posted by bperk at 10:44 AM on July 13, 2012

Jordan has always been a self-absorbed, egotistical dick. But there's no shortage of them on that Dream Team, this Dream Team, or many NBA teams. Bryant making that comparison shows his obvious dickish tendancies too.

Jordan, however, along with being the best ever, is correct. Comparing any team to the group put together on the original Dream Team is just stupid. The original squad was a who's-who of modern basketball history.

posted by dyams at 01:52 PM on July 13, 2012

Bryant, when asked, said they could beat them. I don't see how that's dickish or even outlandish. The '92 team is better but this team could beat them in a single game scenario.

Why? Who should he compare them to. the '72 US Olympic team? The Barstow CYO All-Stars?

posted by yerfatma at 06:31 PM on July 13, 2012

He shouldn't compare them to anyone. Maybe he should say something diplomatic like it is too early to tell or let's play some games first.

posted by bperk at 06:48 PM on July 13, 2012

Exactly. Why is he making a comparison, at this point, to arguably the greatest team ever assembled? Practically an entire roster of Hall of Famers and Kobe has to say this team would beat them? He's asking to be criticized, so I'm obliging him.
