NHL Research And Development Camp - A Closer Look At The Rule Testing and Reasoning Behind It

By far, my favorite new idea (it's one of those things that makes so much sense and is so simple, you wonder why it was never thought of before):
Verification Line - The verification line is a yellow line parallel to the goal line, set back slightly more than 3" inches (size of the puck) from the goal line. Reasoning? The verification line will aide the off ice officials during goal reviews when trying to determine if the puck has crossed the goal line. In the event there is something (water bottle, glove, pad, etc) blocking the view of the goal line, this line could be used to "verify" that the puck has completely crossed the goal line. (The line is slightly further back than the size of the puck, therefore if the puck is in contact with it, a goal would be awarded)

The latest case of falling fans at the Tex. Rangers ballpark was previously noted on SpoFi, along with a question as to whether or not the facility may be cursed.

When your ownership legacy Ring of Honor includes Hicks and a Bush, you don't have to be a snake handler to figure out where the curse is coming from.

God just flat out don't like charlatans or ineptitude.

So Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal then. Arsenal have fallen so far off the pace that Sir Alex is being nice to them.

Doctoring: you're doing it wrong.

re: the verification line...it still won't help on pucks in the glove, but it's a step in the right direction. I still think the only real way to make it foolproof is some type of microchip in the puck, with a sensor on the goal line, but after the debacle that was the FoxTrax puck, I doubt anyone is rushing to attempt that...

Has anyone actually ever invented such a chipped puck and goal line sensor system yet? I can't see it costing too much.

Don't know about "chipped puck", but would appear to be a decent candidate for Passive RFID. Perhaps a patent opportunity for us folks at Spofi :) ?

I don't know how RFIDs stand up to extreme temps, but I remember the biggest drawback to the FoxTrax pucks was they couldn't be frozen to the degree normal pucks could, and bounced like tennis balls. Granted, that was 15 years ago, and technology tends to improve over that kind of time...

The problem with a chip in the puck is that it has to have some sort of gyro-meter inside it, so it can identify if the puck is on end when it crosses the goal line. Otherwise, it wouldn't identify any goals when the puck crosses the line like that (as the chip wouldn't be a specific distance away from the line, even though all of it had actually crossed).

You would probably have to ring both the upper and lower edge of the puck with a thin conductive wire that a sensor in the posts/crossbar/ice would identify if it crossed the line (but would still not be confused by the metal in the posts, skates, helmets, buckles, etc).

I think a camera in the upper left and upper right corners of the net, plus an embedded wide angle camera in the underside of the crossbar is their best hope.

That seems like a lot of tech to embed in a net that will get continuously struck throughout a game, plus jostled and pushed around at times.

You mean we can see more shots like this? Count me in...

(And yes, I know that camera isn't *in* the net...but still...)

Arsenal did actually remember to put players on the pitch didn't they?

Yes, but they had to come off when it was nap time.

Ahh... That explains the 2 goals then.
