Paul Kariya announces retirement ....on the day he did so, Kariya had sharp words of criticism for a league that he believes still hasn't done enough to address the issue of head injuries. "The thing that I worry about," Kariya said in an interview, "is that you'll get a guy who is playing with a concussion, and he gets hit, and he dies at centre ice. Can you imagine what would happen to the league if a guy dies at centre ice?"

Hey, you can't blame a guy for being excited to be at the ballpark
or alternatively
Just how many socks are we talking about? Normally, one nice thick tube sock will achieve the desired effect.

It's happened. And it didn't require a previous concussion.
(although, he passed away in a hospital, his injury was inoperable so you could say he was already "dead" while lying on the ice)
How about dying and coming back to life?
Or being so close to death that your life depended on which end of the ice you were injured?
(I do want to say I understand where Kariya is coming from, and fully support his position about the danger of concussions/head-shots. I just wished he'd referenced Masterton and pointed out how one death changed the rules, so maybe people should change the rules again before another death occurs.)

Way to bring my day down grum, just stumbled across this depressing list from your first link. Remind me never to go skating in Eastern Europe.
