Dolphins Linebacker: I Sold Jerseys in College: Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder said on his radio show that he "hypothetically" sold his jerseys while playing college football for the Florida Gators. "I'll say hypothetically I don't have any more of my Florida jerseys," Crowder said Sunday. "There were some Jacksonville businessmen that really hypothetically liked my play."

So now the NCAA can now hypothetically investigate the Florida Gators. What a genius.

Not that it will necessarily keep the NCAA from investigating more recent issues, but the NCAA's statute of limitations on violations is 4 years, and Crowder was last a member of the football program in 2004.

Are the statute of limitations for an investigation that's already under way or can they begin an investigation when new information is brought to light?

My understanding from the Tressel case is that if it is considered to be an ongoing violation, the statute is tolled. So if Crowder did it and then others did as a pattern of continued violation and the most recent violation was in the past 4 years, the NCAA could reach back to all of it. If there was no continuing violation (i.e., Crowder was the only violation the NCAA could prove or the last violation was over 4 years ago), I believe the NCAA could not do anything about it. The SOL looks to the time of the violation, not the duration of an investigation, although I assume the NCAA can still launch an investigation at any time to look for more recent violations.

So basically the NCAA can hypothetically investigate the Florida Gators because Crowder opened up his piehole.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
