A Matchup for the Ages: "They first met on July 15, 1996 at Fenway Park . . . Every other player who got in that game has retired . . . Yankees manager Joe Girardi pinch hit in that game."
You're not supposed to still be pitching at 44 or playing everyday at shortstop at 36.A lot of people think Jeter wasn't supposed to be playing everyday shortstop at 26...
Timmeh's my favorite Red Sox (he's a lot of people's favorite, actually) and I'm so hoping he can get the 200 wins and especially the Red Sox career wins lead this season.

I went looking for pitcher/hitter combos with long periods of time between first and last matchups.
So far, the longest I can find is 20 years.
Jesse Orosco first faced Tim Raines on April 16, 1982.
They last faced each other May 12, 2002.

Wakefield has gone way past the commemorative penknife and rocking chair stages and is firmly nestled in double grandfather clock territory.

Ironically, I believe Wakefield is the only pitcher left that Jeter can hit a fly ball off.

It's a nice history, one that maybe could be appreciated in a more generous spirit.

That's quite a lineup Boston had that day. Far cry from the lineup they put on the field nowadays.
