To welcome in a new year, do any SpoFites have any bold predictions to make?

Predicted trends or events don't necessarily have to occur in 2011.

My bold predictions: Oregon over Auburn, Patriots over the Saints, Magic over the Lakers, Stars over the Bruins, Phillies over the Red Sox, U.S. over Brazil in the Women's World Cup, lockouts in the NFL and NBA and another majorless year for Tiger Woods.

In other news, enjoy the worst handshake in NBA history.

After Pete Carroll washes out of the NFL for a third time, he will pull a Pitino and return to L.A. to coach crosstown rival UCLA.

I'm not a Seahawks fan, is Carroll doing a bad job there? They seem to be thin on quality players and Hasselbeck looks like he might be done for, so as an outsider I find it tough to say much one way or the other.

The main event of UFC 125 tonight had one of the most astonishing first rounds I've seen as Grey Maynard absolutely laid out the Champion Frankie Edgar and it was an total New Year miracle that Edgar survived as Maynard landed 97 shots.

Then in the second Edgar landed some nice combinations and a spectacular slam and the fight was pretty even from there on, finishing in a draw.

An excellent main event to start 2011.

What the hell, let's stick an early one in here... I predict Mercedes will destroy EVERYONE in Formula One when the new 1.6 litre engines come in in 2013.

For some reason I can just see Mercedes being the best at nailing the formula. (Given the expense of developing said engine is around $100 million.)

Not a good day for penalty takers in the Prem today. Or for refs getting penalty calls right all that often.

Masters: McIlroy, McDowell, Mickelson, Kaymer and Els to finish in the top ten, with Woods and Westwood slugging it out on Sunday afternoon. Westwood wins in a playoff.

US Open (at Congressional): All about Tiger, with sideshows involving the Rickies (Barnes and Fowler) and maybe some brief overseas interest... but Tiger to win at a canter.

Open Championship (St Georges): Very difficult course, so if the wind blows (which it always does) expect a surprise winner, guided home by luck and the frustration of the best players around him. Dustin Johnson for the win!

USPGA (Atlanta Athletic Club): McIlroy's maiden major victory, with a late surge from mid-table obscurity on the final day.

And if even 10% of that happens, it'll be a great season. Happy New Year all!
