Washington Loses to Tampa Bay on Blown PAT: Washington's last-second touchdown went for naught after holder Hunter Smith let a PAT snap slip through his hands, resulting in a 17-16 home loss to Tampa Bay. "If anybody needs to lose their job it's me," said Smith, the team's punter. "I certainly accept blame."
Yeah, that was weird. They didn't actually get five downs, because the Umps gave them a first down at one point that wasn't picked up by Fox, so when Fox said it was 2nd down, the chain crew were showing 1st.
But then they kinda did get five downs, because if you look at the start of that series of plays, Washington have 1st & 10 at the 12, but the other end of the chain gang is standing on the 3, not the 2, so it was really 1st & 9.
So on the first down they were given they were actually about a yard short of where the marker should have been.
Just peculiar.

When the Redskins blew the PAT, all I could think of was this game, and Vikings radio announcer Paul Allen's call: "The Detroit Lions imploded!"

I was watching football at a bar in northern Virginia yesterday where most people were watching this game. I don't think there was a single person in that bar that was surprised that Washington found a way to screw up that extra point--the only surprise was that it wasn't the kicker. Bonus points to Washington for finding creative new ways to not win, though.

I thought the bigger story was that Washington got five downs to get the touchdown. It felt like karma that they missed the PAT.
