Cardinals Sign Lance Berkman: The St. Louis Cardinals have signed five-time All-Star Lance Berkman to a one-year, $8 million deal, returning the longtime Houston Astros slugger to the National League after a 37-game stint with the New York Yankees. In an off year for him, Berkman hit 14 home runs and 58 RBIs and batted .246.
It does seem a potential overpay, but taken in the light of a one-year deal, I think this makes sense in terms of gambling on the upside. Also probably makes sense in light of how execrable the Cardinals line-up was last year outside of Holliday, Pujols and Rasmus.

I agree with holden, but I don't think it's too great an overpay. Berkman could be a very reliable bat.

Berkman could be a very reliable bat.
But if the Cards play him in the outfield, won't his defense hurt as much as his bat helps?

It seems to me that they overpaid for him.
