Newton Serenaded with 'Take the Money and Run': An employee at Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium played "Take the Money and Run" and "Son of a Preacher Man" over the PA system before the game against Auburn, two digs at visiting quarterback Cam Newton that have cost the employee his job. "The University of Alabama takes great pride in our football teamÂs long-standing tradition of playing the game with dignity and class, and showing respect for players and coaches of opposing teams," said school PR director Debbie Lane.
Perhaps Alabama is the exception, but given some of the fan behavior towards opposing teams and their fans that I've seen at college stadiums -- and that security could shut down if they really wanted to -- this seems out of proportion to me.

This whole thing is crazy to me. This is exactly why the NCAA sucks. Cam Newton's dad tried to sell him to the highest bidder and he is about to win the Heisman and Auburn looks headed to the National Championship. Even if they later rule him ineligible, it was still worth it. But, of course, the bigger problem is that some employee at Alabama didn't pay the proper respect to Newton and Auburn.

Other songs not chosen for pre-game:
"Mo Money Mo Problems" -- Notorious B.I.G.
"Money (That's What I Want)" -- Barrett Strong, The Beatles, The Flying Lizards and others
"Cash On The Barrelhead" -- Dolly Parton
Personally, I would have chosen "Money Money Money" by ABBA.

If Alabama had not announced the firing of the employee and the reason, would anyone have even paid any attention to what songs were played or even realized that they were directed at Newton?

Was there any player/fan reaction when the songs were played?

No SEC school is the exception. I love SEC football, but man can the fans be assholes, particularly the student sections. Entire day of drinking = high potential of douchism. Except Vandy football where the highlight is a guy strip-dancing while throw pizza boxes and singing something about being the muffin man.

Lord Farquaad: [playing with Gingy's legs] Run, run, run as fast as you can / You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!
Gingerbread Man: You're a monster!
Lord Farquaad: [tossing legs away] I'm not the monster here, YOU are! You and the rest of that fairytale trash, poisoning my perfect world. Now tell me, where are the others?
Gingerbread Man: Eat me!
[spits in Farquaad's face]
Lord Farquaad: I've tried to be fair to you creatures, but now my patience has reached its end! Tell me, or I'll...
[reaches down]
Gingerbread Man: NO! Not the buttons! Not my gumdrop buttons!
Lord Farquaad: All right, then! Who's hiding them?
Gingerbread Man: Okay, I'll tell you... Do you know... the Muffin Man?
Lord Farquaad: The Muffin Man?
Gingerbread Man: The Muffin Man.
Lord Farquaad: Yes, I know the Muffin Man. W-who lives down on Drury Lane?
Gingerbread Man: Well, she's married to the Muffin Man...
Lord Farquaad: The Muffin Man?
Gingerbread Man: THE MUFFIN MAN!
Lord Farquaad: She's married to the Muffin Man..

Part-time workers are easy to make scapegoats out of, however, if they actually do totally script out their music ahead of time the worker probably needs to go for violating that policy.
Given that we're at the end of the season, I'm guessing the worker didn't have too many hours left to work anyway, so it's not like kids are going to go hungry (just my guess, could be wrong)
