Women's World Cup 2003 in China US?: This year's World Cup will be moved from China due to the SARS epidemic. Alternative country hosts are Sweden, Brazil, or most likely the US. In other women's soccer news: WUSA cutting players salaries from $80K to $60K, in latest cost-cutting bid for survival. Well, I guess it beats making that kind of money at a desk job. Interesting info about WUSA marketing challenges, cost structures and "equity stakes" given to "founding players".

Whoa, didn't realize the World Cup was going to be this year. I was at the US v Brazil semifinal at Stanford in 1999. Screamed myself hoarse. Maybe I'll do posts when the championship begins.

I guess here's where SF and I part ways on this issue. The women in the US play absolutely stellar, phenomenal, ridiculously good soccer. So I'd love to watch it. I want to see the best, and the best American soccer team is the Women's World Cup team.

I'm with Starfucker and Squealy, the best womens teams would struggle in any mens league. The truth is, they can't play very well: no shame in it, neither can I, but then I wouldn't expect anyone else to be interested in my lame attempts to kick a ball straight. (actually, that's not true, I am, in fact, brilliant, but my talent went cruelly unspotted; I still live in hope though). I would think it is the very antithesis of being an mcp to state the obvious fact that women are crap. What would be chauvinistic, and patronising in the extreme, would be to pretend otherwise.

Billy, I've got your back. Stroking the male ego is fun and all, but the current U.S. women's soccer team put the sport on the national radar. I think a few stars have retired, but I think the core is still there. No one has made an argument that it's better or even on par. So does that make it crap? I know I'm taking the bait here, but if they can play the beautiful game beautifully, I'll watch. As Ally McCoist brilliantly points out in FIFA 03, "Ah, he'll be disappointed with that effort. You don't have to shoot the ball hard to score a goal!" btw, who are the Cyberrays?

I don't watch much women's soccer. Will they all take their shirts off?

I'm not sure I'd want them all to take their shirts off.

Okay i will have to admit this, myself and other friends went to the last Womens World Cup Final and you know what it was great. Spent the day before in Pasadena drinking having a great time and then a great crowd atmosphere ( Also the highest pitched screaming i have ever been amongst ). I am sure it wont be as interesting as Man Utd vs Americas at the LA Coliseum but i would probably go again.
