U.S. Swimmer Fran Crippen Dies During Race: Fran Crippen, a 26-year-old open water swimmer on the U.S. national team, died during the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup in Fujairah, south of Dubai, Saturday. After he did not finish a race in which he told his coach he wasn't feeling well, Crippen was found in the water two hours later.

Is there no provision for safety boats to monitor the course during the race? On a 10 Kilometer, triangular course, the legs will be 3.3 KM each. This is not quite 2 miles of water in which to get into trouble. It would seem to me that having several safety boats along each leg, watching for signs of a swimmer in distress, would be a really good idea.

In the meantime...

if I read the story correctly, Crippen tells his coach at the 8 kilometer point that he's not feeling well. So, did the coach just tell him to gut it out and left?
