Dallas Braden upset with Oakland A's shirts.
The money quote:
"It's just not cool," said Braden, who pitched a perfect game against the Rays on May 9. "It's just a serious, gross lack of tact. At the end of the day, I hope I do not become associated with that kind of approach."
Printed t-shirts? Not cool and lacking tact.
Screaming like an over-tired 4 year-old, stomping to the dugout, and then whining to the media? Very cool and tactful.

I think the shirt is awesome. Wonder if I could order one online.

So, the shirts are being laughed at in other dugouts, and the A's proceeded in making them over the objections of their own players?
I would say that would be the not cool or tactful part.
Did you consider also that perhaps Braden has decided he doesn't really want to get behind his behaviour that day, but now Oakland has decided not only to bring it all back up again, but to profit from it?
Pretty shitty.

Really?
He didn't seem to mind the "209 Day" they held for him the day he threw his perfect game.
Side note: He's gone 0-5 since that perfect game and is on the disabled list.

Somehow, somewhere, I think Charlie Finley is having a good laugh about it though.

Huh?
The event was part of Braden helping to provide lower-cost tickets in Section 209, his home area code of Stockton, an area he apparently did pretty will to get out of. How awful of him.
And how that has anything to do with what transpired with ARod is beyond me, especially considering he, his grandmother and his teammates downplayed the incident talking after the perfect game -- the same day the 209 Day event took place.

They only set that up to play up his "We do things different in the 209!" comment he made during his hissy-fit to the media.
Sure, it was a nice thing to do, but dollars-to-donuts it doesn't happen unless he has his "209" bravado moment.
What I'm saying is that when he was the center of attention, he had no problem with himself (or the A's) playing up his rant at A-Rod.

Really?
Grandma "downplayed" it?
She tried to walk it back the next day, just like Braden's trying to walk back what he did.

That's what they used to do to me, back in the "209".
It's why I live in the "519". It's safer here.

According to a recent study: televised coverage of women's sports has plummeted. A mere 1.4% of Sportscenter coverage in 2009. (via Dave Zirin @ Edge of Sports)

Possibly 2018 or 2022. We just had one in 1994, did you forget already? You were like -2 or something.

Wonder what % of Spofi posts.

Almost four. And I was probably still recovering from celebrating the Lions playoff victory in 1992.

I thought the really interesting part of that story was that a lot of the drop-off can be attributed to less sexualization of female athletes.

It would be interesting to see the full breakdown of percentage coverage and not just the percentage for female athletes. I would guess it would be something like this:
Fall: 60 percent NFL; 35 percent college football; 5 percent everything else.
Spring: 25 percent MLB; 40 percent NBA; 20 percent college basketball; 5 percent NHL; 5 percent PGA; 5 percent everything else.
Summer: 65 percent MLB; 15 percent NFL off season; 5 percent NASCAR; 5 percent NBA offseason; 5 percent PGA; 5 percent everything else.
Winter: 55 percent NFL; 25 percent college football; 10 percent NBA; 5 percent NHL; 5 percent everything else.
After covering the major sports which are male-only or male-dominated, there's really not a lot of time left for female athletes or for male athletes in non-majors.

Except in a World Cup summer, in which that gets a good 30-35% of the coverage.

I'm sure he's still proud of his area code but maybe not so much his behavior with the mound incident. Yes, the 209 is linked with the mound incident but it's still where he is from. I'm no fan of Braden but I don't understand how you could have a problem with the comment posted.

Yes, certain events would always override normal percentages. If the study was of an Olympic year, then the percentage of female athlete stories would probably go up because of gymnastics and ice skating as well as athletic events where women may get as much coverage as men (skiing, swimming, diving, curling, etc.).

Which might also explain the spike in female athlete stories in 1999. USA wins women's world cup.

Caster Semenya cleared to race again. Still as a female though gender tests not released. Wonder if the stories on this in 2009 counted toward the female athlete story percentage?
