The 6th Annual chicobangs Memorial SpoFi CFL Pick 'Em: Six! Can you believe it? That's equal to a quarter of the number of players on the field at any given time. Given that, why not lend your ear to the sport that will sweat its way into your heart this summer: the ages-old tradition of three-down pigskin. Almost as old a tradition is our weekly picking of the winners, and the shame and glory found therein. Be a part of history and make your picks inside.

THE PICK 'EM - What we do

It's nearly July and you know what that means: bouncy-ball and slidey-puck are over, and bat-and-stick still has approximately 16,973 games to go until the World Series. What better way to while away the summer days than picking winners and losers in the world's best three-down pointy-ended-ball sport?

THE SEASON - When we do it

The season kicks off this Thursday night and runs for 19 weeks through the summer. There are generally four games per week, running from Thursday to Sunday. If you're in Canada, you'll find the games on TSN. If you're in the States, there's supposed to be a fairly decent U.S. Broadcast Schedule... but of course it's not up yet. But don't worry, there's always Sirius Satellite Radio.

THE RULES - How we do it

Here's how she works. You pick who you think will win, and by how much. You then get points based on the result:

  • - picked the winner? You get 1 point.
  • - picked the winner, and a spread within the Margin of Error? You get 2 points.
  • - picked the winner, and you nailed the spread right on? You get 3 points.
  • - didn't pick the winner, but nailed the spread right on? You get 1 point.

What's the Margin of Error?

It's a window around the spread that's defined as

spread - round(0.3 * spread) <= Margin of Error <= spread + round(0.3 * spread)

So you can get rewarded for being close to the spread even if you're not spot-on. The bigger the spread, the bigger the margin of error, so you don't have to be as accurate when predicting a blowout as you would when predicting a close game. Here are some examples:

Actual Spread Margin Starts at Margin Ends at
111
435
759
11814
201426

So if you picked Toronto by 15, here's how you'd fare given certain outcomes:

OutcomeYour score
Toronto by 202 points (winner + spread within MoE)
Toronto by 101 point (winner only)
Toronto by 153 points (winner + nailed spread)
Hamilton by 151 point (nailed spread only)
Hamilton by 430 points (and deservedly so)

Any questions?

I don't suppose I can pick up the games in Cambodia? Saskatchewan by 9. No? Well it won't make any difference. Calgary by 15. Because watching will probably only confuse me. Winnipeg by 12. It's not like I know anything to start with. Edmonton by 7.

The good folks over at SportSelect have set the following lines for this week's CFL action:

Montreal -11/2
Calgary -131/2
Hamilton -11/2
Edmonton -31/2

The "Big Man" at TSN
(aka Chris Schultz) has these for his weekly picks:

Montreal by 10
Calgary by 12
Hamilton by 5
Edmonton by 6

Perry "The Peerless One" Lefko at Sportsnet uses Randall the Handle's line (in brackets) for his picks:

Montreal (1) to WIN and COVER
Calgary (14) to WIN and COVER
Hamilton (1) to WIN and COVER
Edmonton (4) to WIN and COVER

No sense in keeping score for these non-SpoFites, DJE ... unless, of course, anyone just wants to compare ourselves to the "pros" ... I just like to synthesize things a bit before I lock my own picks down
(he says like it actually helps him)

Grey Cup Rematch. Who doesn't think that the Riders have a whole helluva lot to prove to themselves and their fans? I honestly don't think the the Als will make a repeat appearance for Lord Grey this year. For the sake of a few of the tickets I'm hoping to sell to this year's game, I'd even accept the Riders being there (if not the Double E, of course). This game is at Mosaic. Riders gonna have the desire cranked ... against the odds and sportscasters' unanimity: Riders by 12

Calgary actually looked a whole lot better in the preseason than I thought they would. Argos? Yeah, they're gonna suffer without a proven QB. It could be ugly: Stamps by 28

The Hammer has a lot of people in their corner already. I'd have to say I'm part of that club. I think they're gonna finish tops in the east. Bombers will be better than last year too, which will enable the two of 'em to work together to dethrone the Als. Bombers finish a tight 3rd still though. In what could be the most interesting game of the week: TiCats by 5.

Printers this. Printers that. Frankly, my dear ... I don't give a rat's ___. Not that they don't have the threats, it's that karma is still a bitch. Gonna be a test to see if he's really been humbled since his return. The Double E could be the most exciting team in the league this year. Yes, I'm biased, but they've got some serious depth and threat in the receiving corps ... not to mention the guy(s) gonna be throwin' it at 'em. Richie's got his hands on the D ... a better overall unit taking the field this year. And remember, they do host the GC in November. Right now, it's a 1 in 8 (1:6 or 1:4, depending on how you look at it) shot at playing in front of the home crowd for Lord Grey. Either way, I like those odds. To kick the 2010 season off right: EE by 11.
