Big XII Remains Intact: Texas decides to stay, and others follow, leaving us with a 12-team Big 10, a 10-team Big 12 and an 11-team Pac 10. (And people wonder why our kids' math aptitude is declining.)

I'd like to propose a new name for the Big 12: TOAST (Texas, Oklahoma And Sundry Teams).

YEAH TOAST!

I guess intact doesn't mean what it used to mean, but this is certainly good news for the Big XII North schools. I wonder if they'll go after some other schools (BYU, Boise State, and TCU come to mind, with the Pac 10 apparently pursuing Utah) to try to get back to at least 12 so they can keep their championship game.

Fair point on my use of "intact", but it is so compared to what it looked like it was going to be.

A trip to the vet this weekend revealed that Bevo is not a steer but is instead a cash cow.

I'd love to see Utah added to the Pac 10 and TCU and Boise State added to the Big 12. Give them a chance to show what they can do as a member of a major conference.

I feel that Boise State is not an enticing team to add however, it isn't a major market and I'm sure teams aren't jumping at the chance to play on the blue turf.

For TCU to join Big 12, it would have to swallow a lot of pride. It still has not gotten over not being invited to join the Big 12 when the Southwest Conference folded. That is reason that it was indicating that it would accept Kansas, KState, Missouri, and Iowa State into Mountain West if Big 12 did blow up, but would not agree to Baylor. TCU feels that Baylor got its spot in the Big 12.

I am still waiting for someone to really make a run at Notre Dame, the last of the independents (or at least the only one that really matters).

As long as Notre Dame can get a sick TV contract and special BCS treatment I don't think they'll join a conference for football.

No matter how slighted TCU felt or still feels about not receiving an invitation to the Big 12, I bet they'd jump at the opportunity to be included now.

I'm sure they would jump at the opportunity, but its not going to happen. Big 12 doesn't need another small private school they doesn't really bring much to the table. I hope the big 12 does two more teams in. Since there are only 10 teams, there goes the conference championship game out the window.

Understand that the big schools (Texas, OU) don't really want a conference championship game anyway. Just another hurdle to overcome before getting to BCS, and Big 12 has a history of screwing up its chances with their championship game. But without a championship game, who will play in Jerry's World?

posted by graymatters at 07:18 PM on June 15, 2010

The big schools would be all for a conference champion because of the money it brings in. Why else would the Pac 10 and Big 10 be trying so hard to expand so that they can have one? All these teams care about is money. Any move they make is going to be based on whether they can better their bottom line.

I think Bob Stoops and Mack Brown don't want a championship game because of the chance of choking just before the BCS championship game. But if you ask University Prez and ADs, they want it for $$. Why else would Texas schedule the Ohio States of the world and OU scheduling Florida State and Miami. Bob Stoops has publicly said he'd rather play an easy non conference (easier road to championships).

Unfortunately for Bob Stoops and Mack Brown they don't really have much control over whether or not their teams agree to add expand the conference.

Utah will make 12 for the Pac-10. Somebody explain this to me in small, simple words. I mean, I know they need a 12th for a championship game but the University of Utah?

I don't see them adding any teams to the Big 12 right away, for the simple fact that the teams were sold on the fact of staying together would increase revenue for each school. That is going to be accomplished by splitting the pot by 10 instead of 12 ways now. And it is all about the money. I do think, however, that in a couple of years they will re-expand to 12 teams when they find out that they aren't going to get as much revenue as they seem to think.
