Georgia Teen Dies After Collision at First Base: A 15-year-old Georgia teen covering first base died after colliding with a runner as he waited to catch a throw Saturday during a game in Jacksonville, Fla. Andrew Cohn of St. Mary, Ga., collapsed after the collision and later died at Shands Jacksonville hospital. "The throw was such that it pulled him off the base and into the baseline where the runner is entitled to run," said his father Harold Cohn.
Good god almighty. What an awful thing.

I'm paranoid about my kids' activities, but I wouldn't have thought in a million years that a first base collision could be fatal. Not that it's my choice, but baseball is one of the sports I most want them to play.

This is horrible and no disrespect intended in what I am about to say.
Whenever one of these sports tragedies occurs there seems to be this inevitable discussion about how new helmets should be designed or aluminum bats should be outlawed, or what kind of rule changes can be made to prevent future incidents of the same nature etc. This tragedy in particular in my opinion clearly illustrates the fragility of human life and shows us that really a lot of times freak things just happen, and that they are are a part of sports and even daily life that no one can control. I really feel for the families involved and there is nothing that can be said to make this better.
I know it is cliche (sp?) but we must live life with passion for the activities we love as any moment can be our last. Sitting at home on the couch can also be fatal. Wrong place, wrong time, almost everything we do involves some element of luck, chance, fate whatever.

Obviously, I feel bad for the kid and his family.
As well, I hope someone is going to help the kid who threw the ball and the batter running down the line. There are going to be some emotional scars for them, as well.
