Screenwriter Takes on Hanson Brothers: Slap Shot screenwriter Nancy Dowd has sent her lawyer after the actors who played the Hanson Brothers to stop them from making appearances in character. "What they do in these shows, those are not the Hansons," Dowd said. "I created the Hansons. The Hansons were innocent goons. Not some dirty old guys in wigs. They tell dirty-old-man jokes. I find it offensive." Dave Hanson's response: "I don't know what dirty-old-man jokes she means. When we come out, we talk to kids about how they're doing in school and how their grades are."
If she was present to see their appearances, that's one thing. This sounds like something she was told, and one naughty joke at one event could be embellished to make it appear worse (more jokes at more events).

Part of Dowd's anger stems from the two sequels to "Slap Shot" that were made by Universal Studios.
If so, then I'm 100% behind her. I watched Part II because of my love for the original, and I rue the fact that I can't have that hour and a half back. Didn't even know that there was a Part III, but that's probably for the best.

What the fuck is an innocent goon? And you're the writer?
Don't watch the sequels. And if Dowd is upset with the sequels, then why is she going after the Hansons? Leave those guys alone, Nancy. Trust me - your house is probably nicer then theirs. And some of the thanks for that should go to them.

I'm guessing that Universal Studios' legal defense budget is a bit larger than the Hansen/Carlson budget.
My support in the previous post was simply to show my hatred of the bastardization of one of my favorite movies. If the guys are going around creating residual awareness of her movie while they raise money for good causes, she ought to lay off. You're absolutely right, Weedy.

I'm tempted to suggest she needs to get a man in her house, but I can see her side of it. I love that movie and I've always felt it was a cut above a simple sports movie, but without knowing the actual truth of what goes on at Hanson Brothers events (and I'm sue it varies by venue type), it's hard to say who's right and who's wrong.
