Dodgers acquire Jim Thome and John Garland: It'll be old home week when Jim Thome joins Manny Ramirez on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their reunion was set up when the Dodgers acquired the slugging first baseman from the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Also joining the Dodgers' lineup is right-hander Jon Garland(notes), who came over from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The deals were announced in the top of the eighth inning of the Dodgers-Diamondbacks game, with both trades completed before the midnight EDT deadline required for postseason eligibility.
We need to see a picture of Manny and Thome in Dodger blue.
The pajama pants man and the high stockings man together again.

Jim Thome off the bench. Do you think there is any chance of actually seeing him play 1B?

Thome has played a grand total of 28 innings (over 4 games) at 1B since 2006 and none last year or this year. Maybe he can play some first base in a pinch, but this is a pinch-hit/hope-you-get-to-the-WS-and-can-use-the-DH type of move. Ultimately, with expanded rosters and the fact that all they gave up was a 26 year-old shortstop laboring in A ball, not a bad move for the Dodgers. No way to see this from the White Sox perspective as anything other than throwing in the towel on the season and saving $2MM in the process.

That is exactly how I saw it. I'm wondering where Thome ends up next year.

Home. Then wait 5 years for the HoF to call.

Garland's servicable at the back end of the rotation; Thome won't be seeing much play unless the Dodgers hit the World Series. Likening him to Matt Stairs is a fair comparison; someone who'll come off the bench with either a homer or a strikeout is likely his major contribution.
