New Comment Count When?: When will the new comments since last visit return?

(Meaning I agree with the feature request, because obviously you can't second a question.)

I find SpoFi to be a glorified RSS aggregator without the new comment count. I can't participate if I don't know where I left off last because there is (as The Police said) "too much information running through my brain".

I really miss that feature as well.

I've got an idea for how to implement it without hitting the database more than once per page. I will start poking around this afternoon to see if it works. Let me know if anything weird happens on the site as you use it today.

Give it a try. As currently implemented, when you're done catching up on the site and posting comments, log out. The next time you log in, you should see new comment counts.

I'm not sure what happens when you don't explicitly log out and return to the site later. I will test that myself.

Thanks, rcade.

Thanks for the nudge. It took me a bunch of tries to come up with a way to do this that doesn't hit the database one time for each front-page post.

rcade, you genius, you've done it again. Thanks for allowing me to remove all the sticky notes with comment counts from my monitor. Now I can actually see the screen and read the posts.

Any chance of getting a x link(s) and y comment(s) posted since your last visit type of notice on the front page? Like what they have over at Metafilter. Pretty please?
