Spofi EPL fantasy footie: Week 3 results. The beginning of season surge is complete and tselson maintains a wafer-thin margin at the top of the table.
Three week running form table...

What's the opposite of "meteoric?" "Precipitous," I guess.

May I congratulate my self on making the 4 worst transfers in the history of fantasy football.

Apparently, I'm an injury jinx on my players. First Berbatov. Now McBride.

Me and my useless injured/suspended bench are getting quite comfortable

It's been a brilliant weekend for me, even with my bench full of injured and suspended donkeys. Fantasy week points were great, but there was: - ManU losing, and still without a win after 3 matches (relegation battle anyone? heh.). - El Nino scoring an excellent goal vs Chelsea to open accounts - The first-time outside-of-the-boot killer pass from broken-toed Captain Stevie that unlocked Chelsea and set up Torres Glory glory glory.

Oh, it gets better (but not much better): Referee Styles dropped from next match due to errors in Liverpool v Chelsea match. (That game-tying Chelsea penalty? Malouda jumped and was hardly touched or maybe never touched by Finnan, thanks very much. Even Styles feels bad about that. And that yellow card for Terry that looked like a second yellow for Essien? Sloppy.)

- El Nino scoring an excellent goal vs Chelsea to open accounts And then spending much of the rest of the match looking for someone to dive under. He's been filed under the Ladyboy heading with me, for players I may have to sign whilst holding my nose.

I think wc2k2 is right - 'Pool were ripped off by Styles, and were well on top most of the game. But some other observations from the weekend: Micah Richards is the new Des Walker. United need a fit striker. Teves by himself up front isn't going to work. Nani is the long term replacement for Giggs, not an out and out goal scorer. And it's going to be a long season for Derby, who were awful.

You forgot the ongoing clown show that is Jens Lehman's season thus far.
posted by trox at 08:38 AM on August 21, 2007
David James has his own clown show, too. But, yes, Lehman appears to be more consistent and inventive. That last one was hilarious.

My particular stroke of genius last week was to buy Richards, take a points hit on him and then make him 3rd sub.

I had 12 pts in defenders on the bench thinking that Man City would lose (or at least surrender a goal) and West Ham would lose (or at least surrender a goal) playing on the road. Eh, wot can you do.

Hilarious? Depends on your point of view I suppose.

Eh, wot can you do Have faith in City! btw, I'd like to publicly attack the Yahoo EPL bloggers. Everything I know about the Premiership I learned playing this game last year and lesson number one is that Man City are my defense heroes. The first pick I made this season was Isakkson. When he got hurt, I immediately grabbed Schmiechel. That was until these geniuses pointed me towards Hart. Ever since I've been up against transfer fees for a goalie I already had. Spite overfloweth.

I already have a team going and would like to join the SpoFI league. Any help?

I can add you but only if you have less than 90 pts so far. Drop me an email.

Is that a real technical limitation or impact on your excel sheets?
posted by YukonGold at 08:59 AM on August 23, 2007
We need an application form to discern if applicants are superstars or idiots. And only accept the idiots. Yukon, get in touch with HR, they now how to handle that kind of thing.

gspm, I have to say, again, thank you for doing the stats and presenting them in such a timely and provocative fashion. I look forward to seeing whether I got a nice "hot" color every week. And the form table lets me know how much of a hot streak (or a cold slump) I'm in. Plus, it gives us more fodder for shit-talking. However, it does seem our managers tend to beat up on themselves more than each other. Very gentlemanly and self-effacing. How about a little of the Mourinho-Ferguson jibes? I guess there's no StarFooker hubris to make fun of anymore. Hey, tselson, I'm taking your spot this week!

btw, I can't believe I've been on this site for more than five years. Man.

Yukon - No technical limitation, but I have ticked the box that has closed the pool to new entrants so it is a matter of unticking the box, allowing Ricardo in and reticking the box. Yeah, it does sort of boil down to managing the spreadsheet. But really, in almost every other pool in the Spofi fold if you're not in on opening day then you are not in at all. And where is StarFucker? Looking at the standings it would seem that I'm down in his neighbourhood.

I think Fooker's participation dwindled as soon as he met a certain special lady. I don't know who she is, but Fooker mentioned her once, like his world had been completely rocked, and then was rarely seen again.

Hey, tselson, I'm taking your spot this week! Didn't notice that I played my wild card, did ya? Doesn't that guarantee me 100 points or something? Yeah, I think it does.

Didn't notice that I played my wild card, did ya? Sweet, now I don't feel so stupid for using mine this week too. Race you to the top! I just couldn't handle taking 8 points to get a lineup and still having 3 injured players.

I will not use my wild card yet... I will not use my wild card yet... I will not use my wild card yet... All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

However, it does seem our managers tend to beat up on themselves more than each other. Very gentlemanly and self-effacing. How about a little of the Mourinho-Ferguson jibes? I would, if I ever get into the Big Four. However at this point I can just about manage a Billy Davies deadpan expression. My aim is to finish higher in this league than Derby in the real one.

I will not use my wild card yet... I know I'll regret it come January but whatever.
posted by YukonGold at 07:43 AM on August 24, 2007
I've already made 5 transfers this season, which (I think) accounts for a loss of 16pts (or is it 12? 20?) But it was necessary to find the right squad (for now.) I'm sure I'll be using the freebie before January, though.
posted by Jeffwa at 08:11 AM on August 24, 2007
I wouldn't sweat the squad too much at this point. Team traits are still working themselves out. I'd worry about team value, so you can buy your way out of trouble down the road.

I'm holding on to my wild card, despite the ups and downs. Last season, I played it way way too early. It's my get out of jail free, turbo boost card -- gonna hold on to it real tight. I'll be lucky to hold a top 10 spot this week, but it's early doors (as Ron Atkinson says).
