Fantasy DL Team: Inspired by a comment made by lbb in the MLB predictions thread, let's have a little disabled list fantasy baseball action!!! (Details inside.)
Ambitious, nice. C: Piazza (SD) 1B: Garciaparra (LAD) 2B: Kent (LAD) 3B: Jones (ATL) SS: Uribe (CHW) LF: Bonds (SF) CF: Baldelli (TB) RF: Kearns (WAS) SP: Johnson (ARI) RP: Wood (CHI)

SP: Johnson (ARI) RP: Wood (CHI) aren't they both starting the season on the DL?

C: Paul LoDuca (NYM) 1B: Todd Helton (COL) 2B: Ray Durham (SF) 3B: Troy Glaus (TOR) SS: Khalil Greene (SD) LF: Garrett Anderson (LAA) CF: Mark Kotsay (OAK) RF: Ken Griffey, Jr. (CIN) SP: David Wells (SD) RP: J.J. Putz (SEA) Making up the rules as we go along, if you end up having picked a player who ends up on the DL as of the start of the season and it slips past the community minders here (goddam is already on it!), you can submit a replacement (some teams are still mulling DL moves, so that only seems fair); if you fail to submit a replacement within a reasonable period (a few days -- and no picking someone who gets injured in the first few days), you get no credit for DL days for that player. Also, Yukon -- Piazza is now basically a DH with the A's, although most fantasy leagues count him as a catcher as well, so we'll count him as a catcher for purposes of this league. (Not sure if the DH thing and the corresponding changed injury profile makes you want to change your pick, but just thought I'd point it out.) I also think goddam is right about Wood and Johnson starting the season on the DL (Johnson is slated for a mid- to late-April return and Wood is looking at late-April at the earliest).

aren't they both starting the season on the DL? Bah humbug. Someone had to say them eventually. SP: Pavano (NYY) RP: Dotel (KC) and since I didn't even remember Piazza was in Oakland - mulligan time! C: Rodriguez (DET)

I think if the player isn't injured now, but manages to get injured between the time you pick him and opening day, you get to keep him. I'm gonna wiiiin, I'm gonna wiiiin, I dibs Pavano, I dibs Pavano!

Brilliant idea...absolutely brilliant! Can we share players, or does everybody have to have a unique lineup? 'Cause that might make it tough. C: Jason Varitek (BOS) 1B: Nomar Garciaparra (LAD) 2B: Ray Durham (SF) 3B: Scott Rolen (STL) SS: Khalil Greene (SD) LF: Barry Bonds (SF) CF: Jim Edmonds (STL) RF: Bobby Abreu (NYY) SP: Ben Sheets (MIL) RP: Eric Gagne (TEX)

Okay. One last set of rule changes to make things administratively more simple. If you pick a player that is on the DL as of opening day, you do not get credit for the first DL stint that includes opening day. You will, however, get credit for all subsequent DL stints. So you could pick Pedro and if he comes back in July and pitches but then goes down in August for a 15 day spell, you get credit for that 15 days. If you pick a DL'ed player (as of opening day) that does not end up playing at all (e.g., Francisco Liriano), you get no credit for that player. lbb's suggestion, which may just be a veiled reference to the fact that she thinks Pavano will tear his rotator cuff in the shower the day before opening day, is unworkable in my view because there are too many players who are not officially on the DL at present but whose teams are considering DL moves -- thus creating an opportunity for the grums of the world to game the system. Hopefully this is the final on-the-fly rule change. TBH -- while it would be fun to do a draft so that no one shares the same player, it's probably just not feasible as it would entail us all getting together for some sort of draft. So everyone make the run on the Griffeys and Gagnes of the world!!! (I think Gagne's already on the DL as well, but under the new rules, that's fine.)

TBH -- while it would be fun to do a draft so that no one shares the same player, it's probably just not feasible as it would entail us all getting together for some sort of draft. Yeh -- maybe for next year. This will be fun as it is. My picks: C: Yorvit Torrealba (COL) 1B: Nick Johnson (WAS) * 2B: Brian Roberts (BAL) 3B: Chipper Jones (ATL) SS: Bobby Crosby (OAK) LF: Manny Ramirez (BOS) CF: Jim Edmonds (STL) RF: J.D. Drew (BOS) SP: CARL PAVANO!!! (NYY)** RP: Brian Bruney (NYY) * Johnson is starting season on DL, so this stint doesn't count, but I know he'll come through for me and manage another season-ending injury in July. ** Pavano, who starts the Yanks' season opener today, will get shelled mercilessly for five innings, give up seven runs, and then develop a blister on the pinky finger of his throwing hand, taking him out until mid-September when he can return just in time to stink up the playoff chances. I will rule you all.

Rules are simple -- pick one each of C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, SP, RP for your team. Highest aggregate number of days on the DL at the end of the season wins. Players who start the season on the DL (e.g., Pedro Martinez, Nick Johnson) are NOT eligible. In terms of positional eligibility, players who are primarily or solely DHs can be listed as a 1B; for other players, make a good faith effort to just try to list players whose primary position is the selected position -- in the event of doubt we can refer to Yahoo!'s opening day fantasy listings for eligibility.
