Spofi EPL FFL: Week 5 Update.: Some changes to the table. Your man on the top is...
The top three made big gains on the table. And none of them had been in the top 3 before. We may have to get used to seeing the blue stripe at the bottom. Or at least amongst the 0 transfers set.

Oh snap. The Battle of Southern NH is joined.

I'm confused: looking at my team, the numbers add up to 46, but Gerrard was my captain, so shouldn't I have 56? I'm stupid: he scored 5 and the screen already shows the doubled total, right?
posted by yerfatma at 07:44 PM on September 20, 2006
I always glance at these threads, not understanding much, really just seeing numbers and a few colors. The only thing that I've noticed is that squealy is always at the top. Interesting.

Yup, if you'd been to 26 of the last 27 lockerroom updates that's be true (Yay me for breaking the streak in week one when he hadn't had time to build up a lead). I should give a shoutout to chicobangs - he's new to the pool this year and hanging comfortably in the top 10 and looks to have a decent shot at the top 5. apologies to the other newbies, I just know chico has been vocal in his participation what with dropping by these threads and all.... S'up, James H?

Bloody hell, I barely hung on to the top half. Bellamy is off, for sure, and what happened to Parker? Knackered?

I freely admit that I'm hanging in the top half through dumb luck and frantic study of the FSW recap shows when I can catch them. One of these weeks, I fully expect my bubble to burst, and someone who knows what they're doing will take my place in the first division.
posted by chicobangs at 10:45 PM on September 20, 2006
well, a frantic study of the FSW recap is more than I do. so you're in good shape. in fact a top half finish is nigh assured for merely paying attention to your team for the full term.

I think gspm's right, certainly in relation to the overall competition. So many players lose interest it's difficult to do worse than their rudderless teams. The major question for me this FPL season is when/if Henry will start firing on any cylinders. I've kept the faith even at the expense of a double-transfer this week. I fear that may have been an error and he won't play at the weekend, but who knows?

Woohoo! I'm yellow! Yellow! Wait.. what does that mean? Err, third best score of the week, right? I love you, Andy Johnson. Like the ugly child I never wanted.

Freakin transfer fees dropped me below Yerfatma. That and my strategy of making Friedel the captain. Thanks for giving up two goals to what seemed to be an offensively challenged team. At least Portsmouth won again. Our sister city across the Atlantic is bringing me great joy.

Portsmouth is this year's Wigan. Surprise team of the season.

A couple admissions. I am pretty clueless as to what I'm doing. I just spent two weeks in a Chinese hospital beating a nasty virus. I've tried some transfers for this weekend and will hope for a positive impact.

Freakin transfer fees dropped me below Yerfatma. Not exactly. Your insistence on not using your wildcard dropped you below me. Once I have you down, I'll never let you up.
posted by yerfatma at 06:41 AM on September 22, 2006
Whatever you say, O now-wildcardless one.
posted by chicobangs at 09:17 AM on September 22, 2006
Why wouldn't you use it the first time? You know you're going to do a transfer that week. Who knows what the future holds? Unless you were only oving one player, why not save yourself the sure damage vs. potential damage down the road?
posted by yerfatma at 09:43 AM on September 22, 2006
I'm saving it for when Portsmouth (probably) falls apart and I have to jettison their entire D corps. oh yeah. w00t!!! first time ever in the top 3 for me.
posted by garfield at 10:24 AM on September 22, 2006
I have to say I enjoyed using the wildcard. While it didn't really gain me as much as I'd hoped, it was enough to move me up 3 spots into the top half. Plus, it was a magical feeling to move 10 players in one week without getting penalized. Wildcard may be one of the smartest features added to the fantasy league.
posted by worldcup2002 at 10:30 AM on September 22, 2006
I agree. It's a stroke of genius. A sort of equivalent of the transfer window. I definitely could've used the wildcard last season.

I'm saving it for when Portsmouth (probably) falls apart NEVER!

I'd love to have some kind of wildcard feature for the hockey pools too.

Wildcard may be one of the smartest features added to the fantasy league. Ironic really seeing as it's clearly been introduced to dumb down the game.
posted by squealy at 04:49 PM on September 22, 2006
Yeah, it definitely saved my dumb ass from a seasons of 3-point weeks, but the nice thing is that kind of dumbing-down can also make things more competitive. Reducing the cost of improving a team means leagues will be more competitive.

Did I miss the part where John Terry was to take the week off? BECAUSE I DID NOT GIVE PERMISSION FOR THIS TO HAPPEN.

Which, of course, is why squealy doesn't like it. Indeed. If I could pick a captain it'd help as well. Bloody Lampard. Well done gspm you git.

Whoever had both Henry and Lampard is laughing his ass off this week.

Hehe. 12 pts for skipper King Thierry. He's back.

13 points for skipper Frank the Crank, thankfully I at least took the armband off the 30 million pound disappointment (so far, I really do think he'll pick up the thread sooner rather than later). And woohoo for 3-0 Reds!!!

Riise!! Riise!!
posted by garfield at 01:14 AM on September 24, 2006
I gave Henry the armband. Which would have been good had I not also transferred Riise out this week. And how come Hyypia hasn't been playing? That kind of news never gets down here.
posted by owlhouse at 05:11 AM on September 24, 2006
I put Henry in first thing Saturday morning when I read he was fit and would play. The site seemed to accept my change, but when I check today it looks as if it didn't. I really hate that site sometime. Must control fists of death. At least Arsenal got the win AND ManU drew with Reading!
posted by scully at 07:46 AM on September 24, 2006
As far as I know, Terrapin, the game week was already closed at that point. I was going to make a change too, but it said it would be effective from the next gameweek, not this weekend, so I didn't bother.
posted by Mr Bismarck at 08:45 AM on September 24, 2006
You have until 30 minutes before the first kickoff of the week to change your team for the same week.

That's what I thought, wc02. I thought I had too, but apparently not. My own fault, I am sure. Just frustrating.

Trademark goals from Riise and Alonso this week for sure. Did anyone more knowledgeable than me see the Newcastle-Everton match and if so can you tell me how Ameobi wasn't offside for his goal?
posted by billsaysthis at 03:49 PM on September 24, 2006
That stumped me. I didn't see enough replays, but those guys that jumped out of the way before Ameobi got the ball, they should've been called offside, too. It's one thing if you're behind Ameobi or on the other side from where the cross came in, but that one guy was in the path of the ball, and he had to duck and run away to avoid the ball! He should've been called offside, even before Ameobi got the ball! Dumbass call. At least Cahill got a goal, so I'm up at least six points from the cobber. Portsmouth defenders better play a blinder tomorrow so I can catch up with the rest of you all.

With my eye, Newcastle players were offsides on numerous occasions, but were not flagged. Definitely a home-pitch advantage. Ditto on the pompey D. Come on Sol, head in a corner!
posted by garfield at 08:53 AM on September 25, 2006
Well, that's torn it. Nolan's gone and scored in the 22nd min vs Pompey. Campbell better get a hattrick. Ha!

... still Squealy. But there's some shuffling in the 3-6 spots.
