Auction/Keeper league update:: Anyone who's signed up for the Auction/Keeper league, please look inside for further detail and discussion. Also, we still have space available if anyone has interest.
If you still need one i'll get in your league. I've never been in a keeper league but looks like a blast. That's quite the set of rules.

Yikes! On second thought . . . It looks incredibly complicated. If everyone else is experienced with these types of league, it would probably be better for the competition if I don't join.
posted by bperk at 12:42 PM on March 14, 2006
I guess that's what I'm most concerned about, especially for those who have already signed up. My intent was not to create this hulking boehemith. This may be too over the top for everyone's taste. There are certainly ways to simplify.

Download them here at your own risk. Yikes! Them's some rules. I'm glad I skipped all the way to the last paragraph:
Yerfatma will be responsible for any sanctions or punishment for breaking these rules, mainly through verbal berating…so it may be hard to identify if you’ve done something wrong or if it’s just a normal day.

Declare me all-time winner now. That would simplify things. As to the complicated rules, AFAIK most of the people in the league would be doing this for the first time. To be honest, once I got by the tax code-like size of it all, it sounds like a lot of fun (especially the contractual stuff and planning for the future). Don't give up because you don't grasp it all. Neither does Yukon, which means this league could feature a shitload of arguing and fighting. Which is the point of roto sports. Am I right or what? Anyone? [crickets] On preview: that's what I get for not reviewing those rules.
posted by yerfatma at 01:00 PM on March 14, 2006
The free agent pickups look more complicated than they need to be. I think you could go by regular free agent rules. I like the contract system.

How exactly do you plan to conduct the draft? Does Yahoo! support auction-style drafts?
posted by qbert72 at 01:11 PM on March 14, 2006
Yeah, bperk, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Keeper leagues generally need a tax-code–like constitution: the amount of detail is needed to deal with the little issues that will crop up here and there. But that doesn't mean the mood is going to be cut-throat and uber-competitive. It's certainly a long-term commitment, but it still sounds like fun. I'm unfortunately not playing (already in the roto league and a keeper league of my own), but I figured I'd chip in my two cents of reassurance anyway.

bperk, Free agency is one way to cut out some of the overhead. Seemed like an interesting way to keep everyone from running for the new guy who just had a hot week or more importantly, the guy who just got traded to the AL. The latter will be protected by waivers but the management of who do I want to spend my money on had an interesting spin. qbert, if we retain the idea of doing an auction we'll have to use chat software and pretend like we're all in the same room. Yahoo hasn't made that leap yet, there are some pay services ofr online auction drafts but they looked pretty crappy. Unless of course you all want to visit New Hampshire for a day and we can actually conduct in person. The Red Hook Brewery will be more than happy to host us.

would the spofi campfire be useful for the draft?

I'm in, yukon. I just didn't want to be that person in dominoes or spades that doesn't know how to play and ruins everything for everyone.
posted by bperk at 02:13 PM on March 14, 2006
would the spofi campfire be useful for the draft? I only tested it out for a little bit, but sure it seemed pretty cool. Yerfatma originally suggested as well. I guess the only key thing is making sure we have a transcript available since everything will need to be entered manually. Those features are probably available to full accounts? I only visited as a guest. bperk, send me your email eric DOT wyman AT gmail DOT com

The thing with Campfire is, we'd have to cap the league at 10 people (or pay for the next level of service). Campfire does provide full transcripts.
posted by yerfatma at 02:42 PM on March 14, 2006
So why do we pick AL only?
posted by tron7 at 02:48 PM on March 14, 2006

I think we're at 20 concurrent users in Campfire, until March 22, or something like that. DrJohnEvans can confirm, he's the account holder. Plus, the Campfire limits have just been upgraded.
posted by qbert72 at 02:52 PM on March 14, 2006
Picking AL-only was a specific suggestion from a couple experienced players. If you go to ESPN or Rotowire or Sporting News, they'll have cheat sheets for auction values. The way I understood it was those values assume that you won't be using the entire MLB. The recommended values would be totally off and you'd run out of budget fast. Plus, AL-only is different from most traditional leagues (for fun) and it would be much easier to track potential minor leaguers.

If you go to ESPN or Rotowire or Sporting News, they'll have cheat sheets for auction values. well that's a relief, I thought I was going to have to completely wing it.
posted by tron7 at 03:08 PM on March 14, 2006
The other reason for using AL- or NL-only in auction leagues is full-league would suppress the values of good players. By constricting the supply, it forces people to be more creative with their drafting. Oh, the statistical analysis we will have . . . $/performance spreadsheets all over the place. I could care about winning; come for the title, stay for the drafting, the taunting, the planning and the analysis. </economist-slobber>

Here's where we're at: 1. Draft Date - I'll throw out a date. Sunday, April 2, 2:00EST. Thoughts? We will use the spofi campfire. 2. Possibly simplify free agent process. I think it's a viable option to say that anyone who's not on a team's roster (active or suppl.) can be picked up at any time. That would actually make things easier for the commish. Thoughts? 3. Opinions on AL-only? If the majority is more interested in NL we can certainly switch. I thought we might have more AL bodies and bullpenpro is already in an NL-only (figured a change would do him good). Open to suggestions. 4. We have a full league now.

Just a question about the categories we are using for scoring... We are *NOT* scoring runs and Ks, is that correct? Just want to verify this as they affect my dollar value projections.....

Mistake in the rules. Standard 5x5, runs and strikeouts are scored.

posted by elovrich at 08:30 AM on March 16, 2006
I like the free agent system in the rules. You can't pick up someone for the day they are pitching and drop them.
posted by bperk at 08:35 AM on March 16, 2006
I had thought about using OPS, but I think going the traditional route with AVG is better. Yahoo is updated. Thank you for catching those discrepancies. bperk, there will be an inning limit so as to stop the streaming of pitchers. The one downside with the proposed FA system is if you have a couple guys get hurt in a week you may need to wait up to 2 weeks to replace them.

Yukon: great job. These rules should hold up well for this league. There will be some growing pains, and the rules will necessarily evolve (as they do in all leagues), but at first look I don't see a failure in them. The "tax-code-like" breadth therein is representative of the reality of running an actual baseball team, the replication of which is the principle purpose of fantasy baseball. I think this league will be fun. And I think beating yerfatma after all his season-long trash talking will be even funner... er. er. If anybody new to this format has questions, I would be happy to misinform... uh... help in any way I can. I've played in a keeper league for a while and can tell you that experience provides no assurance of success.

Yukon: Just a few more things that may need attention in the rules: 3. Rosters A team’s roster consists of 30 active major league and minor league players 3.1. Active Roster A team’s active roster consists of 20 active major league players acquired through the preseason auction, waivers, free agent claims, and trades. 3.2. Supplemental Roster A team’s supplemental roster consists of 6 active major league or minor league players included on an American League team’s opening day 40-man roster at MLB.com These players can be acquired through the supplemental draft, trades, demotions from the active roster, or through waiver claims. 3.3. Roster Compliance All teams are expected to maintain a roster that complies with the guidelines set forth in Section 3. Any transaction (e.g., trade, demotion, waiver claim) that increases the size of the active roster beyond 25 players must be accompanied by a corresponding transaction (e.g., trade, demotion, waiver) that simultaneously returns the reserve roster to its maximum 25. Any transaction (e.g., trade, demotion, waiver claim) that increases the size of the supplemental roster beyond 6 players must be accompanied by a concomitant transaction (e.g., trade, promotion, waiver) that simultaneously returns the reserve roster to its maximum 6. Should a team fall out of compliance their roster will need to be returned to compliance within 2 days or risk the freezing of statistics until such changes have been made. 6. Supplemental draft After the conclusion of the Auction Draft, in which teams acquire their 20 man active rosters for a sum not to exceed $260.00, owners successively draft up to 6 additional players in 6 separate rounds of selection. Initially, players acquired in this fashion comprise a team’s supplemental roster. 7.4. Supplemental draft contracts Players selected in the supplemental draft are assigned contract values determined by the round drafted in: Rounds 1-2: $10 Rounds 3-4: $6 Rounds 5-6: $2 If the roster size is 30, shouldn't that leave 10 for the supplemental roster, or should the 30 read 26? 3.3 States 25 active and 6 supplemental, so now we have 30, 26 and 31 as roster sizes. 6. Supplemental Draft looks like we are back at a roster size of 26. 7.4 Same 26 players, if 30 we need to figure out the contracts for them. Any are fine, just need to know before April 2. Is that date finalized? Free agents go to the highest bidder. If more than one team bids the same amount on a player, and if that amount is the highest bid, the player goes to the team that was lowest in the standings on the day the bids are due. Personally, I would rather use the waiver priority for this, but will go with the majority. And one last note, it may be more consistent and lead to less confusion if all times are listed in the same time zone. I noticed that the Free Agency deadline is PPST and the Trade deadline is ET (Standard or daylight not indicated either, but for Aug 31 would be EST).

April 2 is fine with me. I don't have much time right now to prepare, but at least I'll have a couple of seasons to make up for my drafting mistakes. AL-only is OK, although I would really love to have the full MLB. I don't have a great understanding of the issues, though, so I'll defer to the people doing the work. Thanks Yukon and all his advisors!

Thanks to everyone who has signed up, I'm real excited to try this out. Couple quick things. 1. We have 9 people currently in the league, one unfortunately needed to drop. So we have space available for 3 more, 1 at the very least would be great. 2. I've changed the league to AL-only. After doing some more research on keeper leagues, restricting the player universe to one league is the norm and will matchup with any auction cheat sheets you may find/use 3. Thanks to bullpenpro's help. I've taken a first shot at some rules and regulations. Download them here. Hopefully this by itself won't scare anyone away, but since we're going totally outside the Yahoo box here I needed some way to level set. These rules are mostly based off an existing league bullpenpro plays in, with some mods for using Yahoo. As I said, it's a first draft. Looking for comments and ideas from the group to help shape setting this up. We will need to discuss draft options as well. Right now, I'm planning on using Yahoo IM to do the auction (mainly since everyone has a Yahoo account for the league). It may be advantageous to break it in to two sessions since it may be time consuming. We will also need to ideally find an impartial auctioneer to keep things moving and well documented. I'm willing to kick a little iTunes love for anyone that we may find.
