Sportsmanship 101. :
In reference to this post about sportsmanship in athletics, here's a display of true gamesmanship. For those of you who saw the MNF Eagles-49ers game, you saw what being a professional is all about. [more inside]

Koy Detmer was having his best day as a pro, then goes down with a horrible elbow injury. As he gets put on the cart to leave the field, writhing in agony, the entire Eagles team comes over and gives him their best. That's not the real surprise...The 49ers defense also goes over to him to congratulate the QB on a great game. This is the kind of sportsmanship some players need to learn, to truly be professional athletes.

Also, the fifth graf in the linked article is the reference to the gathering at midfield.

it was sweet n all ... but koy was pissing me off before that incident. his little bitch-slap dance after his touchdown passes came across very unsportsmanslike.

Jeez, Dano, the guy hasn't started in three years, is absolutely playing off his ass, throws a touchdown pass, and you begrudge him a little celebration -- with all the stuff that goes on every Sunday?? It is unsportsmanlike if he was taunting the Niners, which I just don't think he was doing. He seemed to have too much respect for the game -- I mean, after every score, he was high-fiving everyone on his team ... how many QBs do that? I think he was just really excited about the game, was doing really well, both teams knew his story and recognized that he was eating the 49ers lunch, and that's why the gamesmanship was so touching. You can't tarnish that with some trite observation about a dorky dance that wouldn't even have made the cameras any other weekend.

I like the bitch-slap dance. (I call it the "spanky-spanky".)Takes cojones to do that on the field with the defense watching you. I also like the guy. Koy seems like a man who truly marches to the beat of a different drummer. I hope to see him back in action soon. And speaking as one who has dislocated an elbow, I understand why he was writhing in agony. It's the most pain I've ever endured, including a broken jaw and multiple skull fractures. Until they popped it back in. Then it really hurt. Fortunately, unless there is serious damage to the tendons or ligaments, he ought to be back in form pretty quickly. (My injury was not caused by doing anything heroic or even vaguely athletic: fell off the roof while cleaning the gutters.)
