Official Superbowl discussion thread... A precursor to the eventual game winner fpp... and so we don't intermingle the picks and the chatter. All things game related, pre game related and commercial related.

All 4 of the guys on the CBS picked the Patriots. That has to be some reckoning of doom. He picks one team on the HBO NFL show and another right before the game. He can never be wrong. Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell.

posted by jerseygirl at 04:46 PM on February 01, 2004

dammit. SOMEONE score. I don't want this idiot at work to win the 0-0 football square.

posted by jerseygirl at 06:07 PM on February 01, 2004

Wow, this is some anemic offense here. Or is it great defense? Or both?

posted by jeffmshaw at 06:20 PM on February 01, 2004

SportsFilter: Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. I thought the problem with soccer was there weren't enough goals? Amazingly, John Barnes, he of Liverpool and England fame is doing some sort of presenting job for Channel 5 here. And the commentators just namechecked Man U and the Arse. I appear to have wandered into some strange twilight zone.

With all the pre-game talk of tough defenses and no-name offenses, I wonder if this will end up a 0-0 tie through several overtimes, then finally be won on a safety. OTOH, with 9:32 left in 2Q, Pats are threatening by which I mean a drive with multiple first downs. Though the one they just got on 4th and inches was due to a poor spot by the officials--the Panthers should have gotten the ball back.

posted by billsaysthis at 06:29 PM on February 01, 2004

Thank God for that. Have I ever mentioned I'm a Patriots fan?

posted by squealy at 06:45 PM on February 01, 2004

god, this is a boring game. but as long as the patriots stay on top...

Pregame: Astronauts. What the shit? First half: No spectacular commercials that I caught. Loved the field position war -- it had become obvious that Carolina would not have a chance of scoring until they could receive a New England post-score kickoff -- but then New England did score, and everything went to hell. Come on, guys, what the shit. I want to see both quarterbacks and at least three receivers burst into several pieces like broken Micronauts next half. Halftime: WHAT THE SHIT????? Please, somebody, nerve-gas Houston before the third quarter. The players could seal off the locker rooms and be safe. Just kill Kid Rock.

Hey look, the microphone is five feet from his mouth, but Nelly's still singing! I'll personally kill Kid Rock for a Corona and lime. And... can someone stick a sock in Phil Simms' mouth? Does that asshole ever shut up?

posted by dusted at 07:38 PM on February 01, 2004

This is probably only news to me, but I feel I should mention Kid Rock, seeing as he's just been on the halftime show. I've decided to support the Panthers for the second half 'cos they're so crap they remind me of the Blues.

posted by squealy at 07:38 PM on February 01, 2004

was that a streaker?

posted by jasonspaceman at 07:44 PM on February 01, 2004

posted by jasonspaceman at 07:46 PM on February 01, 2004

AND is it just me or are the Sierra Myst commercials the worst ever?

posted by jasonspaceman at 07:48 PM on February 01, 2004

was that a streaker? nope. janet jackson came back out after the halftime show and decided to show everyone BOTH of them.

INTERCEPTION?! INTERCEPTION!? BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADY!

posted by jerseygirl at 08:44 PM on February 01, 2004

Why do they keep showing closeups of the ugliest cheerleaders? My brother has yelled "no, no, pan left, pan left!" about six times.

posted by dusted at 08:45 PM on February 01, 2004

You'd think they would come up with a more attractive squad. But then again, why aren't there male cheerleaders yet?

Jake the snake!

posted by jasonspaceman at 08:51 PM on February 01, 2004

I do not understand the Panther's reasoning by going for 2 points the last two times.

posted by jasonspaceman at 08:55 PM on February 01, 2004

If the 22-21 stands up (or at least the one point CAR margin), is Delhomme the MVP? Or Reggie Howard for the INT?

posted by billsaysthis at 08:55 PM on February 01, 2004

Delhomme

posted by jasonspaceman at 08:56 PM on February 01, 2004

The first time I agree was not how I would have gone, jason, but the second try was understandable since a 1 or 2 point lead is little difference.

@#&$&@&#$^^!! score patriots, do something! i hate these anti-drug commercials with wholesome messages. these are, by far, the worst.

Congratulations to nomich and hal for winning the playoff pool. Trox would have made it a threeway but for taking the under. And isn't that a pleasant image?

posted by billsaysthis at 09:40 PM on February 01, 2004

Aw, man. If Hal and Nomich hadn't come in with the right picks at the last moment... ah well.

posted by Bryant at 09:49 PM on February 01, 2004

Sorry Bryant, I had to mull this over for the last couple of weeks. Also, can I say, "Fuck the Pats," on this network? Man, what a heartbreaker for us Panther fans. I really, really thought that they didn't have a chance, but those guys played their hearts out. I'm very proud of the Panthers right now, but it still sucks that they lost. And congrats to the Pats and their fans. As ugly as this game started, it turned into a cardiac special, and the best team won.

posted by NoMich at 10:08 PM on February 01, 2004

Nah, it's all good. I got the excitement of thinking I tied for first, which is really all I wanted anyhow. The Panthers played a really ballsy game and I have more respect for 'em now. They took advantage of every opportunity, played well, and had a real shot at winning the game.

posted by Bryant at 10:20 PM on February 01, 2004

what bryant said. the game drove me up the wall. i was worried, i was nervous. so that's a pretty good indicator of a tough opponent in my book.

posted by jerseygirl at 10:25 PM on February 01, 2004

I think it woulda been me that woulda been the bread in that triple-decker sandwich if not for taking the under. [Stupid scoring binge.] Great game, though.

posted by jeffmshaw at 10:48 PM on February 01, 2004

By the way, I should point out that one of the scores was a PRIME NUMBER (29). As well, the commercial that got the biggest laugh from my group was the Pepsi/Bears ad, though the NFL-Network/"Tomorrow" ad got a lot of laughs too. My favourite ad was the IBM/Linux/"Shake up the World"/Muhammad Ali ad. Seeing the young Ali in the clips and then hearing him say (in a stronger voice than I've heard in a while) "Shake up the world"...very powerful.

Nah- best ad, the Staples office supplies one. A classic!!!

posted by hincandenza at 11:17 PM on February 01, 2004

what Hal said.

Staples was my fave too, but the Bud one with the candle on the horse drawn carriage (farts are funny!) was good too. I like the end of the HR Block talking Willie Nelson Doll one where Zim asks it for advice (the crowds "Ohhh" on the fade to black was good).

i liked the donkey who wanted to be a clydesdale. i still didnt see the pepsi/britney/beyonce gladiator commercial. what up with that?

posted by jerseygirl at 06:30 AM on February 02, 2004

ya, the britney/gladiator thing got ixneyed...not sure why. my other favorite was shardsoglass.com ice-pops. I smoke, but what a hilarious premise.

That sounds like some copy of Dan Akroyd's dangerous toy company CEO shtick. But I didn't see it. Anyways, probably the most interesting Super Bowl to date, right down to the wire. A tough defensive opening, with airtight plays from both sides, both pushing each other hard but not risking anything, and then an opening up of the game, with both coming out swinging, zinging pinpoint passes all over the field. And then the final killer punch at the end. Storybook ending for Vinatieri. I was rooting for the Panthers, especially at 29-29. But it was a fitting result, I think. I can't believe I actually found the game more entertaining than the commercials this year. The losers: the pre-game and half-time shows. They were mercifully short. What a confabulated travesty of talent.

...but how about that new Ford. A nice teaser, followed up with a run around the track. 'Wow.' 'Yeah, Wow.' That is one fucking sexy American car, which is quite a unique statement nowadays.

posted by garfield at 12:21 PM on February 02, 2004

i like the turnback to the old retro cars (the ford t-bird, and now the gt). i'm a former mustang owner and a big fan of fords. the suggested msrp is going to be "under $150,000". :| uh, yeah, sure, i'll take two!

posted by jerseygirl at 12:29 PM on February 02, 2004

yeah, the price is a little fantastic, but its nice to see Detroit designing with the heart, rather than with strictly with the ledger.

posted by garfield at 12:44 PM on February 02, 2004

I saw that GT, or at least a protytpe, in person at the SJ Car Show a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say my buddy was drooling and could barely pay attention to the other cars on the floor.

posted by billsaysthis at 05:05 PM on February 02, 2004

So a car nut friend of mine told a story after that commercial, which I'll assume to be mostly accurate: Apparently, way back in the day, Ford was in talks to buy Ferrari. The deal was almost signed, sealed, and delivered, when at the last minute Enzo Ferrari backed out. Ford head honchos were apparently mighty pissed, and went to their backup plan. The word came down from on high at Ford: do whatever it takes, but fuck Ferrari. No expense was spared, and the GT was created for the explicit purpose of competing with, and beating, the Ferrari in the European race circuits. Despite the unusual scene of an American manufactured car appearing in European race circuits, without any real import market commercially, the GT began steadily beating up the Ferrari cars over the next 4 years, as a sort of "Fuck You" to Ferrari, care of Ford. And that, apparently, is the story of the Ford GT, and this latest model is just a concept car throwback to those heady days.

posted by hincandenza at 07:46 PM on February 02, 2004

the suggested msrp is going to be "under $150,000" Well, you can always go to Barret-Jackson and pick up an original, but they tend to go for more. Gran Turismo works for me.
